A Master Quaker Historian interprets the beginnings of Quakerism in the religious context of England of 1650. His introduction to the 1985 version outlines the advances in Quaker scholarship of the Lamb’s War (1650-1660) since he wrote the book in 1964. His illumination of the contrast between Quakerism and Puritanism is still valid, as this is the key conflict of that time, for Quakers.

This is a classic of early Quaker history and its roots in the Puritan movement. I have two copies of this book, one from when I was a student at Pendle Hill in 1969-70.

This pamphlet includes Margaret Fell's own narration of her life as a Quaker, and passages from her letters and epistles to Quakers, and her tract on Women Speaking that justifies the preaching and speaking of women in Quaker meeting. It is full of information for anyone interested in early Quakers, since she was an early convert and co-founder of the organization of Quakerism. She took on such matters as how to provide for the early Quaker missionaries and their families, how to support Quakers through the intense suffering of the early persecutions, and founding the women's meetings for business. As well as setting up practical arrangements, she wrote letters of encouragement and counsel to individuals and meetings. Hugh Barbour provides additional interesting information aboutt the life of this courageous and powerful woman.
