The stories featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson have long attracted a particular type of fan attention--false scholarship. There are articles and books devoted to treating the tales as though they are factual reports of Holmes, written up by Watson and presented to the public by Doyle. Devotees will argue matters of chronology, identities and so forth. This book is an example of the type, treating the Scandal in Bohemia as an actual account and trying to fit it into actual world history. Interesting if one likes this sort of thing--oh wait, someone famous said this so much more cleverly than I am going to manage.… (mais)
