Elliott Erwitt (1928–2023)

“Para que una fotografía sea buena, debe tener equilibrio, forma y fondo. Pero para que sea muy buena también debe tener una magia indefinible”. Estas palabras de Elliott Erwitt se han convertido en la mejor forma de definir su extraordinaria y trascendental obra. Su pulsión por capturar la esencia de lo cotidiano con humor e ingenio, desde el corazón, ha hecho que pase a la historia como uno de los mejores fotógrafos del siglo XX.

La Fundación Canal presenta la exposición Elliott Erwitt. La comedia humana, que reúne 135 obras del fotógrafo a través de tres secciones que comprenden tres de los ámbitos icónicos que fueron su fuente de inspiración: las personas, los animales y las formas.

La primera de ellas invita al visitante a observar las inolvidables capturas de Erwitt, que lograron convertir en extraordinarios momentos de la vida cotidiana; la segunda sección guarda las emblemáticas instantáneas en las que fue capaz de captar, de una manera única, a cualquier animal que se presentara frente a su objetivo y, al tiempo, reflejar la perspectiva de la mirada de los animales, sobre todo los perros; y la tercera, ofrece un recorrido por sus obras más abstractas a través de composiciones inesperadas, que conforman el escenario de esa comedia humana que quería mostrar.

Cada una de estas secciones está compuesta por «impresiones de trabajo», obras utilizadas originalmente por el propio Erwitt para el desarrollo de libros o revistas. Y las “impresiones maestras”, copias de época de gran formato que representan una selección de sus fotografías más emblemáticas impresas con el fin específico de exhibirse en museos o galerías. Juntas, las “impresiones de trabajo” y las “impresiones maestras”, forman una colección única que proviene directamente del estudio de Elliott Erwitt y que se presentan por primera vez ante el público con esta disposición.… (mais)

With the intent of capturing the essence of the Italian personality, de.MO has commissioned Elliott Erwitt, the wittiest of renowned photographers, to create Flip o Rama: Italia, a unique collection of flip books. From a girl eating ice cream, to Massimo Ferragamo with his kids, to Valentino in his studio in Rome, Erwitt’s photos reveal a collection of delightful characters.

This series of 18 mini flip books, each consisting of 28 photographs of a single animation, is housed in a beautiful cloth box. Flip o Rama is a wonderful treat for anyone who wants to discover Italy’s colorful charm.

Elliott Erwitt was born on July 26, 1928, in Paris and spent his childhood in Milan. In 1948, Erwitt moved to New York, where he met Edward Steichen, Robert Capa and Roy Stryker. Erwitt was invited to join Magnum Photos in 1953 by Robert Capa. A member of the prestigious agency ever since, Erwitt has served several terms as its president. One of the leading figures in the competitive field of magazine photography, Erwitt’s journalistic essays, illustrations and advertisements have been featured in publications around the world for more than 30 years. Erwitt has had one-man exhibitions in numerous museums and galleries around the world, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Institution and Paris’ Museum of Modern Art. Based in New York City, Elliott Erwitt travels obsessively. He likes children and dogs.
