This book reminds me of the many church Christmas pageants in which my own five children were involved. It also reminds me of several when I was the adult in charge of lively children who were wise men, shepherds, angels, and of course the main characters, Mary and Joseph. Their lively spirits were daunting to adults in charge; and then on performance night, their antics brought bemused smiles and smirks from adults who watched with delighted pride.

In the book, we have the simple light rhyming prose that tells the story of the birth of the Christ child and His placement in a lowly manger for a bed. The chapel or church in which the children are acting out the Biblical story is simple with no grandiose architecture or glittering gold. Simple. Just as our Lord's birth was in a simple place.

The illustrations speak to the "make-do" costumes and stage props. We see the sweet faces of children - some solemn and some enthralled - as they go through their assigned placement and say their lines.

We see a tradition that should continue on through the ages as it has for generations of church going families - the telling and re-telling of the story of Christ's birth as an infant into a world that literally had no room for Him.

I love this little book and families with young children will treasure it.

L-O-V-E! LOVE IT!

The cadence in this story is perfect! As a mother that reads aloud A LOT of books, rhythm is very important, but as this book comes from a musician, it doesn't surprise me that it's spot on. It's sweet and simple, goofy and fun. Each animal has a unique character and the illustrations capture them perfectly. Attention to even the smallest details is what gives the book heart. The picture on the side table features Rory's family, the farmer's overalls his signature. As a huge fan of farm books and because of the author, the authenticity rings true. I'll be adding this book to my wish list, I could read it over and over.

Another 5 star book! This one was so inspiring and actually my favorite of the 2 books he wrote. Such a thought provoking book. What a great testimony for the Lord. Life does go on but we never forget the memories. He is such a great author. Hopefully he’ll write some more books.

What’s happening at the farm?! The cow wants to be a horse, the horse wants to be a duck and all the other animals are just as confused! The Cow Said Neigh by Rory Feek is a hilarious and playful read with plenty of rhymes and lovely illustrations. Tip: act shocked and surprised over the wrong animal sound. Ask your child to imitate the correct animal sound. Note: if your child is still learning animal sounds, you may want to hold off on this book until they are a bit older.

This is an absolutely delightful book, and I look forward to reading it for storytime! The rhythm is good and the pictures are big and bright. The children will be able to interact with the reader by making the animal sounds.

4.5 Stars. This picture book is a fun story that will be a real hit with kids who love silly rhyming stories. We start out with a cow who thinks the horse lives in greener pastures, so decides to try on the horse's voice and goes neigh. Then the horse sees a duck, and the duck sees a sheep, and so it continues as we check in on the various animals you'd expect to find on a farm. Of course while reading this with a two year old, she kept making the animal sounds and laughing as each animal made the wrong noise. The playful rhymes follow a good pattern and the illustrations were adorable. I really liked the cartoon like animals and the expressions on their faces. This is a cute story that would be a great one for young children, especially those learning about farms and farm animals. The publisher, Thomas Nelson, generously provided me with a copy of this book upon my request. The rating, ideas and opinions are my own.

“Once Upon a Farm”, an autobiographical book by Rory Feek, is a story about lessons learned and life lived. Feek is living his life for God and shares little snippets of that life with the reader. Feek is a well-known songwriter and musician who used to be one half of the country music duo “Joey and Rory”; the other half being his wife Joey who passed away in 2016.

I have seen a lot about Joey and Rory on social media, especially Joey’s battle with cancer. I thought this book would be about how Rory is dealing with her death and moving on. Instead, it’s more of a compilation of essays written by Rory about random topics involving his life and lessons he’s learned. It’s not in chronological order either. The book is interesting because I did learn more about his life. It did make me realize that life is short and I should live in the moment. I should not always wish for a better life but love the one I’m living. Rory Feek is a good writer and there are some great lessons in this book. I would recommend it to anyone who loves hearing the personal stories of famous individuals, or who loves country music and living, or is even just a fan of the couple!

Content: I give this book a PG-13 rating due to some issues discussed and some content. Some examples of the content are: Rory talks about his past life drinking and chasing women; there is some content that may be controversial in the Christian community; the word “hell” is used; references to sex; the Lord’s name is taken in vain.

Rating: I give this book 3 stars.

Genre: Christian non-fiction

I want to thank Rory Feek, BookLook Bloggers and Thomas Nelson for the complimentary copy of this book for review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I express in this review are my own. This is in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s CFR 16, Part 255.

This is a lot of fun. A cow want s to run and wander like a hours and says neigh. The horse likes the duck and says quack. It’s all a lot of fun. The story builds on itself with the barnyard animals. The illustrations match. This is an excellent book for any story time collection.½

Although ths can be read as a "stand alone", I feel my review would have been more complete if I had read the first book about his life before and after his second wife's appearance.

Once Upon a Farm, was a heartfelt story of country musician, Rory Feek's, courageous journey through life, after the dreadful loss of his beloved wife.

He reminisces of events past and present, and offers much wisdom he has gained.

I would like to expand on two separate comments he made.

#1 in a reference to "new information" he received from a daughter that devastated him he stated, "I'm not the judge.." ..."It's my job to love her."
I feel many of us could beneficent from this if we applied it to not only loved ones, but to others as well. For Christians, it would be well for us all to remember those are the words Jesus taught..

#2 When discussing his reading (or lack of) he stated he was "a non-fiction guy..." and liked to "read about real people and the lives they lived."
I felt this way for many of my adult years. I read both non-fiction and fiction (almost any book I could get my hands on) as a youth. Then I decided I needed "real knowledge" so pursued only non-fiction.

In my more "mature" years, I have made a new discovery. Fiction can not only stimulate one's imagination, but many authors do hours of research before writing a book. I have learned about the Amish lifestyle and the variations of Amish cultures and the difference between Amish and Mennonites, in a delightful way, through fiction!

I considered my knowledge of history was quite good until I read a few Historical Fiction stories, which brought out little known facts in history. I have realized by having a wider interest in most genres, I have enhanced my reading enjoyment.

Rory Feek, writes in a personable manor which enables the reader' to feel like he/she is being "spoken" to. There are many more valuable and interesting points of consideration he makes throughout his personal "journey".

The book Title and Cover are very well-chosen.½

What a wonderful book. I came to know Rory and his beautiful, brave wife through his blog, so I could not wait to purchase his book. And it did not disappointment. Each chapter is short and written as if Rory is sitting and visiting with the reader. The stories are sweet, warm and moving; I could not put this book down.

This is a comprehensive look back on the author’s life, including his marriage to fellow singer Joey who died of cancer too early. The author attributes much of his happiness and success to God. Religious beliefs play a major role in his life and in this book. While I expected much more about Joey based on the title, she was more of an afterthought in this work.
