This book should have been more interesting, but the characters spend too much time lecturing one another about political economy, philosophy, and such. If I hadn't been reading it for a book club, I wouldn't have finished it. The "mystery" is both uninteresting and resolved by the middle of the novel.

As to the Holmes characters, Sherlock is reasonably portrayed, but Watson isn't. He liked sea stories, not philosophical treatises. It might have been interesting to see Mycroft (who has always struck me as a Tory through and through) discuss matters with Marx, but the actual dialogue is simply sterile.… (mais)
