Noisy Russian ballet music. As the incidental music to a stage spectacular it would be fine enough, but it doesn't really stand up on its own as concert music. MM 29 ix 2015

Fascinating stuff, though definitely on the lower levels of Parnassus. Listening through some very lo-fi sound from the Stalin era (1947), we hear the slick but agreeable conservative composer conduct two Suites drawn from two of his several ballets, one from 1922 with the curious title THE SHEEP'S SPRING and the other work from 1912, KHRIZIS. The literary origin of the latter was, of all things, Pierre Louys aphrodite, classic of high-camp erotica and fake antiquarianism. The music is rife with the cliches of musical orientalisa, but is enjoyable nionetheless, as indeed is the case with most of Gliere's music: it's almost too easy to enjoy. Itr has been suggested before that this is the key to his survival from the tsarist era into post-Stalinism. Regardless, this is a most agreeable discovery top me. High marks to Consionance Recordings, whoever or whatever that may be.… (mais)
