When I got the third book in this series did I do something I usually don't do. I started from the beginning. I heeded the advice from my mother who read them from the start and who thought it would be wise to read from the beginning so that everything would be clear when I got to the third book. I decided to listen to the audiobook narrator by Katarina Ewerlöf. And, that was a good choice since she is an excellent narrator.

The Singö Spy, is the first stand-alone book in a series about Solbritt Andersson, a 62-year-old police detective who during a vacation finds out that around 30 years before a murder was committed on the island. It was a mysterious murder, no one was caught and no one understood why the man was killed. And, it happened the day after the murder of Prime Minister Olof Palme, so the police were busy dealing with that. So, Solbritt decides to do some digging. However, it does seem like some people wants her to leave the case alone, and soon she gets a written threat to leave it alone, but that, just makes her more eager to find out the truth.

The Singö Spy, is a thrilling and engrossing book to listen to. I found myself quite taken with the story and its characters, not to mention the wonderful description of Singö. The book is the kind that I really enjoy to read thanks to a combination of interesting personal lives and the mysterious cold case that is just the start of bigger things for Solbritt. Speaking of Solbritt, it's really refreshing to read about a woman in her 60s. I mean I'm happy when an author dares to write about women over 40 so this was really cool. And, she is a tough woman, with a happy marriage and a loving relationship with her grandchildren. Her granddaughter Isabelle is spending the summer with them and she will also experience a lot of things during the summer.

I quite enjoyed this book, however, you really need to keep on reading the next couple of books because some things will be solved in this book, but this is just the start. It's like throwing a rock in a lake and see the waves that spread like rings on the water. Solbritt starting to investigate the murder is the rock, and the waves are everything that will happen because of it.

ENGLISH REVIEW

Three men go out in a boat to fish on an ice-free January afternoon. One of them never returns. The man, who turns out to be connected to the island's military past, is later found dead in the harbor at the Black Club outside Singö.

The experienced police inspector Solbritt Andersson and her colleagues are working on a comprehensive investigation of Rankena Tech, which seems to have wide branches of international crimes behind the faded facades. The police are approaching a breakthrough in the case, but are increasingly frustrated by the fact that they are constantly rising. Are there any leaks or infiltrators in Norrtälje police house?

At the same time, a body is found in the harbor at Svartklubben outside Singö. Has the victim, a retired man who lived by the sea throughout his life, really drowned in shallow water? What are his connections to the island's military past and to the charming and powerful priest of Singo church?

**********

The Messenger is the third book in the Singö series. I read all three books in a row and they are all very good. (Read my review of The Singo Spy and the Arsonist). With the Messenger do we finally get some kind of closure on the story that began in The Singö Spy, but not a total finish which I like since I look forward to reading more books about Solbritt Andersson. The Messenger is just like the previous books entertaining and compelling to read. I like Solbritt and her family and now it seems that Solbritt may even permanently move to Singö and work in Norrtälje since she has applied for a job with the police force there.

I think it's interesting that the investigating of Rankena Tec begun when Solbritt on her free time started to investigate a murder that had happened 30 years earlier and now they are trying to bring down a major international criminal company. At the same time, at Singö, does it appear that the dead man who was found drowned might have been murdered. But, is there a connection to Rankena Tec?

The Singo Spy, the Arsonist, and the Messenger can be read independently, but I think you should read them from the beginning because it really feels like one book that has been divided into three parts. I was glad I chose to read from the beginning and it was great fun to read them in a row and now I really look forward to the next book!

Thanks to Bokfabriken for the review copy!

A violent fire destroys caravans and tents at Singö camping, where a group of Romani lives. Criminal Investigator Solbritt Andersson, who is loaned from Stockholm to Norrtälje Police Station, and her colleague Lena Karlsson leads the investigation. The perpetrators have not left any traces on the site, except that they have sprayed a brown triangle on a wall. Soon there is also a farm on the northern Singö in flames. Is there a connection between the fires?

In parallel with the complex fire investigations, the police are continuing to map the network around the spy and ex-military Sven Löwengrip. The past once again throws long shadows over the archipelago.

**********

Reading the three published books in the Singö series back to back has been great. It actually feels like reading one book that has been split into three since the storyline around Sven Löwengrip is continuing in this book. I found this book to be just as good as the first book in the series.

Some time has passed since the storyline in The Singö Spy, and Solbritt is now working with Lena Karlsson who she worked with in the first book after Solbritt cut her vacation short when the digging into the Singö murder that occurred thirty years previous turned out to have connections to the present time. Now there seems to be an arsonist loose Singö, but are the two fires really connected, or is possible that someone else would have a motive to burn down the farm? This case will get very personal to Solbritt when someone close to her is suspected being behind the fire that burned down the farm.

The police may have had some breakthrough with the old Singö murder that occurred the day after Prime Minister Olof Palme was murdered, but it's far from completely solved. The spy and murderer Sven Löwengrip is still not found and it seems that the contraband group that the police destroyed is just a tiny part of a larger criminal imperium.

The Arsonist is a good sequel, here we finally get answers to questions from the first book, even though not everything is solved. That's what I really enjoy about this series. That not everything is solved at the end of the books. But, at the same time, every book feel like a closed chapter. That Solbritt and her colleagues are slowly getting closer to the mastermind behind it all.
