This extensive musical tome offers an impressive analysis of George Frideric Handel's cantatas. I have always been enthralled with Handel's music, but I had never heard of his cantatas or the facets of his sexuality that are the subject of this work before.

So many of the books which purport to find 'gay' undercurrents in the past use so self-evidently dubious historiography that it is tempting to disregard all studies of this kind. I think that Ellen Harris' book is a wonderful and judicious exception, scrupulously attentive to the evidence; never once placing greater weight upon the evidence than it will really bear; and opening up just enough scope for us to be able to encounter the young Handel plausibly as a human being, but without prurience or evasiveness one way or the other; and rejoicing - as we all should - in the music.½
