An outstanding choice of essays. The first collection of critical essays focussing only on 20th century travel writing. Compiled in 1992 when travel literature was at a high.

There are sections devoted to different travel-writing styles, critics, American and British writers. It broaches such topics as cultural chavinism, the newly opened world of traveling for women, and the problems of crossing the same territory as past writers. It also has an excellent bibiliography of travel writing since 1900.

After reading this I didn't look at travel, travel writing or guide books in the same way. Very enlightening.… (mais)
