This book should be in every home where they either own or are considering owning a dog. It is not a children's book in my opinion, although it could be used by children with adult supervision.
This is a simple and fun to readbook. There are eye-catching illustrations and it covers most of the dos and don'ts of dog ownership,. There are tips and sensible information as well as problem solving. There are a lot of things discussed that could be dangerous to dogs such as poisonous plants, food that will make dogs ill, and the favourite of most children, how to tell is there is something wrong with your dog by looking at his/her poo. The illustrations draw you into reading the information on the page. Most of the remedies are universal regarding treatment and most are common sense. This is more of a preventative book rather than cure book which is what owners of pets need. I really did like the section about using the Heimlich for a choking dog. I had never seen that illustrated before.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

For Dog's Sake is filled with warnings, safety tips and horrific illustrations of what might happen if said warnings and safety tips are not strictly followed. The illustrations and type of humor in the book lead me to think that it is meant to be read by children about to enter into dog ownership, but the harshness of the illustrations and descriptions of what might happen are quite terrifying!

I can totally see the usefulness of being able to judge your dog's poo against a colorfully illustrated selection of twelve (yes twelve) dog poos, including one healthy and eleven alarmingly not-so-healthy versions. The book is easy to search for specific dangers such as toxic foods and plants. Chapters about specific areas of danger are also helpful for planning and safeguarding your house and yard.

Also included were listings of dangerous foods and plants which may seriously harm your puppies, and where they might be found. Photographs, not drawings of the dangerous flowers and plants are included for easy identification, which is another positive feature.

Overall, this was an intense read, and perhaps focused too much on the dangers of dog ownership rather than being more balanced and including more of the joys.

For Dog's Sake is an adorable and informative book that every dog owner needs in their home. The book goes over what is normal for a healthy dog and what is not. What to look for in poisoning, the scoop on poop, prescription dangers, household dangers and prevention, plants - poisonous ones and not, outdoor dangers (there is more than I would have thought ), toxic foods, bones, allergies, Holiday safety, and CPR. There is so much stuffed in this book and lots of delightful drawings on each page showing the animals acting out the scenes, it is so cute! I did learn a lot, especially on the poisonous plants and foods. I would encourage anyone, regardless of how many years you have owned a dog, or how much you think you know about dogs, to get his book. I have owned dogs for all my life and know dog safety, and as a nurse I am educated in human safety, but this old lady still learned a lot from this book! I received this book for a honest review and it in no way effected my rating or content of my review.… (mais)
