Sir Ninian had a destinguished career as Barrister at the Victorian Bar prior to his appointment to the High Court of Australia in 1972. He sat as a Justce of that court for just on ten years. In 1982 he was appointed Governor-General of the Commonwealth at a time when there was still great rancour in teh community about the role and powers of that office following the sacking of teh Whitlam government in 1975. Subsequent to his retirement as Governor-General he embarked on a career of further, conspicuous public service: as Ambassador for the Environment; International Peace Envoy; Member of teh Permanent Court of Arbitration; Judge (ad hoc) of the International Court of Justice; a Judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia; and Chair of the United Nations Group of Experts for Cambodia.

This book is comprised of ten essays by distinguished legal colleagues and academics whose speciality brought Stephens' activities within their perview. A must for anyone interested in legal and constitutional history in Australia; or for the development of the rule of law.
