History of Public Health initiatives created by African Americans. Argues that health reform was the early start of early black civil rights movements. Health improvement was tied to the struggle for social and legal changes. The Public Health movement was also gendered - women did most of the organizing - while men held the formal leadership positions. But African American club women, teachers, midwives, nurses and home demonstration agents composed the majority of the movement.
