Warner's brief county history of Suffolk up to early medieval times summarises the county's archaeological developments during the last quarter of the twentieth century in a succinct readable style. Starting with the underlying geology, examining early agricultural patterns and moving through the Iron Age, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to an analysis of the Domesday Book records, Warner's study compares favourably with Williamson's sister volume about Norfolk. Perhaps inevitably, given the glory of Sutton Hoo, the Anglo-Saxons get particular prominence in this journey but the Roman treasure of Mildenhall is also covered in detail. THe book forms an admirable survey of the early human past of Suffolk.… (mais)
