Not quite William of Baskerville, however - though The Name of the Rose is not exactly a detective story either.

Wow, that is pretty funny... I have to say my medieval detective heroine definitely falls under rule #1 and, at times, #6. Fortunately (or unfortunately?) I've avoided the other 8 rules.
