Hi folks! I'm wondering what folks think is the best CD recording of Tosca? I was in Half Price Books tonight, and everything was all about Puccini's heroines or arias, but what I care most about is Scarpia's big scene in Act I. I'm not very knowledgeable about opera, but really want a full recording of this.

The 1953 Callas/Gobbi/di Stefano recording, de Sabata conducting, with the orchestra and chorus of La Scala. It's legendary.

Thank you! Will look into that.

Oh, I'm also interested in an orchestral recording with no vocals. (I do also want the vocals, but I want it without too.) Does this exist?

Sorry if I seem like I'm trying to make other people do my work. So far my attempts to look up recordings have been murky and confusing.....

>3 amysisson: I have a CD recording called Puccini Without Words, consisting of orchestral arrangements of pieces from Tosca as well as La Boheme and Madama Butterfly. The label is CBS Records.

I will second the recommendation of the Callas/Gobbi/di Stefano/de Sabata recording of Tosca. I've had it in my collection, first on tape and then CD, for a good 25 years or more now. Tosca is the one opera where there seems to be virtual unanimity among critics as to the best recorded version.

Thanks! In the meantime, I've been listening online (via Amazon Prime Music). But I still want to purchase a CD, and I'm glad there's agreement on which to buy. :-)
