actually i know where the coin is from, but i'm wondering if anyone can cite a reference?
the coin is a 17mm Greek bronze from Messana Sicily, specifically the Mamertini tribe, and dates from after 288 BCE.
the obverse shows laureate Ares facing, and the reverse a bull butting right, and the whole coin has a beautiful green patina.
it seems to be a variety of Sear 1138, but is unusual in that both Ares and the bull are facing right.
i can't find any reference to such a die combination in any of my catalogs, nor have i had any luck online, so i'm turning to the experts here at LT to see if anyone can shed some light on this.

Do you have an image available? This is a small group, but someone might be able to offer a suggestion if you post an image. (I think LT accepts regular HTML IMG elements; a link would also work.)

i was just coming here to post that i have found a positive ID for my coin... and at Forvm in fact.
it turns out to be a rare die combination for that series, and is cited as Särström 62 (2 specimens recorded until 1999), Calciati 8, Minì 11.
i would've gone there first, but it's been awhile and i couldn't remember my password. so i finally just started a new account.
