New colors for Dewey Decimal/Melvil Decimal System

conceptDawg recently pushed a small—but cool—change to how Dewey Decimal/Melvil Decimal System numbers are seen and traversed, both in the new statistics and on your catalog.

Basically all the top DDC levels now have a consistent color:

As you go down the codes, each line gets lighter. Chris played with the colors changing left-to-right at each level, as the change on the top level. But he couldn't get anything that looked and worked better, so he went with a subtle lightening.



The new colors are currently on:
* DDC stats pages (e.g., mine: https://www.librarything.com/stats/timspalding/ddc or yours: https://www.librarything.com/stats/MEMBERNAME/ddc )

Why not on MDS page too? https://www.librarything.com/mds/863.64 That one only got a weird pinkish tint all around

Yeah. Damn it. We are continually bedeviled by a server change that I cannot get fixed.

I like it. In fact, I like it better than the colours in the Graphs & Stats, which have too much red and blue and not enough green and yellow.
It all looks very nice, though sadly more or less unusable to someone like me who doesn't do Dewey or Melvil.

Off the top of my head it's (non-fiction) light pink - society, dark pink - beliefs, dark green - people & countries, light green - animals & nature, red - health, grey - languages, brown - economy and justice, light blue - technology, dark blue - education, light turquoise - music & drama, yellow - art, lilac - home & hobbies, purple - biographies, black literature.
And the fiction section had a different colour coding.

It needs to be said that this system isn't meant for university libraries and research libraries, it's for public libraries that are generally a little lighter on the hard sciences.

Now I have to check Rainbow out. I've never heard of it before. I think I will stick with SAB, though.

I like it but I noticed that the total of my collection "to read" doesn't equal the total shown in that collection on my home page. Are there books with no Dewey number?

>20 dudes22: Yes. One quick example: many public libraries that use Dewey have something different for Fiction, like FIC, instead of a number from the 800s. I'm sure there are other reasons, but that's the first thing I thought of. The sources you use to Add Books likely play a role, too, but I haven't looked too closely at that yet, even in my own data.
