"The Christy Miller series was actually born when a group of thirteen-year-olds challenged me to write a novel. I'd been questioning the content of their favorite books when they said, 'Why don't you write a book for us?' I told them no, I only wrote picture books. But they persisted: 'How hard could it be? We'll even tell you what to write! We want a love story with teenagers at the beach.' And there you go. Summer Promise first released seventeen years ago and is now translated into five languages. I continue to hear from readers all over the world, many girls saying that they gave their life to Christ after reading Summer Promise. I love that!"
Cute story! My mom found the collection at a used bookstore the day we were talking about how much she loved them when we were younger, and convinced me to read at least one of them along side of her. It was a cute, quick read, and I could totally see it as something that I would enjoy as a younger girl. Not so much now as it's not really my style of reading, but I know younger me would have gobbled it up. If only we could go back in time! ( )
I read Summer Promise as well as all the Christy miller books as a young teen and loved them. The thing I loved most about them was that I could compare to Christy. Christy was a teenage girl who went to stay with her aunt and uncle on the beach for the summer, and did a lot of learning while she was there.
I remember feeling like Christy was my friend and that if she didn't hurry up I'd take Todd for myself. Though Todd seemed almost too good to be true at times, the characters as a whole made me want to grow closer to my Christian friends.
While I don't look at them as a great literary work and Summer Promise by itself wasn't much but the entire Christy Series had some good life lessons played out in an accessible and understandable way. I would recommend it to any young teen girl whether she be looking to grow closer to God or simply looking for a good read.
I enjoyed this story. I loved that it was a clean romance story that my YA daughters could read without me cringing.
They enjoyed this story as well.
The only thing negative that was said by any of my girls, as well as myself, is that the writing style was a little "jumpy" or as said in an earlier review, a bit stilted. ( )
