In the hospital ER where she works, Mary is used to chaos. But lately, every aspect of her life seems adrift. She's feeling disconnected from herself. Voices appear in her head. For as long as the heroine can remember she's always felt like an alien to those around her. She's had this deep soul wrenching emptiness inside her that slowly bleeding her dry. Then, one day she discovers why. She's attacked by 2 armed men, but is saved by the angelic voice that's been in her head telling her to run. Wounded, starving and dying, she finds herself in the woods. The hero had the complete opposite childhood. For as long as he remembered he has felt rage-deep penetrating rage. But he was lucky. As a child he was found by an old woman-one of his race- who taught him about himself and helped him come to terms with his being. For over 900 years, he's search for her-the other half to his soul. And now he's found her. But she's badly wounded spiritually and will die without the aid of a healer. At first she's distrustful of her-which is only natural. But she can't stop the desperate emotionally attraction to the stoic man who shows little emotion. It doesn't take very long for her to realize every crazy word he's said to her wasn't crazy at all-but the cold truth. And she realizes that the man she once thought as cold is actually burning hot. He lets his emotions out slowly with restrained bursts of desperation. He tries to keep it together- to keep calm so as not to scare her but soon he can't hide his feelings for her. Truth is he feel in love with her at first sight- but what he feelings for her and what they feel for each other is deeper than love. They're been soul mates since their first life and since than have always searched for each other, sometimes being lovers and sometimes being friends but they've always been together. As the last mated pair of a race of beings being killed by the betrayal of one of their own, they must find a way to kill him. I thought this book was truly amazing. It was thrill ride that just didn't quit. I freaking loved the hero like I've never loved a hero before. He was marvellous strong-amazingly capable to carrying the burden of their safety. But in those small moments when he allowed the heroine to see just how deeply he loved her-that was true magic. I really love it when two characters are destined to be together. It makes the fact that typically romance novels have their hero and heroine fall in love over the span of 2 days more believable. This book was heavy into fate and destiny where soul mates die and live and die again searching for their other half. This was a fantastic book that kept you on the edge of you seat from start to finish. ( )

I don't think I'll continue with this series. It doesn't have the kick of Dragos and Pia's world, although its ideas are very original. It's their execution I'm having trouble with. ( )

Rising Darkness is not Paranormal Romance. Once you set your mind like that, like Karen Marie Moning's Fever series and Neil Gaiman's UF books, this book started slow but chock-full of character-building and world-building around it and romances is hardly in the agenda. The story possibly consisted of 1/3 of what it should be. Its a multiple POV story that centered around on a woman having some problems with her mental issues only to realize that she's something even stranger and older than time itself. Its also the story of a troubled boy who became a dangerous man who spend several lifetimes seeking for the other half of his life and his mentor, an old woman with her own brand of secrets and also an enemy of time themselves.

The book did start slow and it took only several days from the start to the end. But in between them, was a wealth of interesting things like nightmares, dreams, the past and somewhere in between. Characters simmering and age old mysteries unveiled (which normally would take several books just to happen) and all leads to a long forgotten memory between a star-crossed lovers and the consequence in the present.

I do think this book as beautiful. The reviews were uneven but as a series, this is a good start. Its not anywhere similar to the Elder Races so I do get the disappointment with the lack of romance interaction early on in the book (there's a definite contrast between reading this book and the excerpt from the Elder Races' continuation at the book) but the story is decently paced enough with its own multiple mysteries that keep me on reading.
