I really liked this book. The first reason I like this book is because of the end pages. They are beautiful and detailed and really caught my eye. They are on a red background the illustrations are of playing cards, pretzels, and candy.

The second reason I really like this book is because of the way Mavis' character grows through the story. For example in the beginning she is a young girl who loves to go to a candy shop, then she is concerned that the shop hasn't been opened in a few days so she goes to the shop owners house to check on her because she knows she is sad her husband died. Then Mavis is showing Mrs. Gully how to do things she doesn't know how to do like cut the grass. They developed a friendship and Mavis grew up and got married. Even through all of that she kept Mrs. Gully company. I think the author did a really good job of showing how she grew into and adult and became a woman but never let her friendship die.

The main idea in this story is reaching out to people in need and making friends. ( )
