This book highlights the practical use of mathematics while telling it in an engaging and funny way. This book is great for the child that asks when they will ever use math in the real world. This book tells the story of a family that receives a new penguin every day of the year until they have 365 penguins. The book presents various math problems on different pages for the audience to solve. Ex: making a cube of penguins 6x6x6 = ? The book features an explanation of global warming and the melting of the ice caps in the South Pole that is dangerous to penguins. The bright colors of the illustrations are intriguing for children. I think this book would be best for third and fourth graders. To live with just 1 penguin would be enough, but what would you do if every day for a whole year a penguin comes to live with you and your family? It all started with new Year's Day. A penguin arrives on this family's doorstep with a note attached: feed me. The next day, a new penguin and a new note. Every day, a penguin and a note. Pretty soon, father had to stack them in pyramids, cubes, and arrays. Penguins made rectangular prisms and more 3 dimensional shapes. But how are they going to feed all of these penguins? Father had to do the math. One the hundredth day, he calculated that it would cost them $750 a day to feed them! Only 265 more days, 265 more penguins, and 265 more notes to go! 365 PENGUINS is an entertaining story about a house that is being filled up by penguins. Each day, more and more penguins pile up. The family spends time counting using various math strategies and sorting the penguins throughout the story. At the end of the year the family has collected 365 penguins and a visitor arrives to bring them home. The book ends with a science lesson about global warming. The illustrations are simple and unremarkable, in my opinion. However, I imagine it would be very difficult to draw 365 penguins with great detail :) Good book for both a science and math lesson! sem críticas | adicionar uma crítica
