It's a light, fun and entertaining story. (After the first few paragraphs) Karen Hawkins is a master at mixing humor and romance with a dash of drama. She’s right up there with Julia Quinn and Lisa Kleypas in my book. This story is a fantastic start to her new series and I'm looking forward to the next in the series. I received a copy for review. All opinions are my own. Humor and happenstance! Another ultimatum type story where the hero/protagonist must marry in order to secure his fortune. Unfortunately his target bride will not go quietly into the night! Miss Theodora Cumberbatch-Snowe has always adored her brother's friend Connor Douglas but marriage to him would be that of a sometime bride as the dashing Scots privateer hied off on more adventures leaving her behind. Hence the idea to settle for the steadfast squire Lancelot Fox. He has little imagination and great expectations of a wife who knows her womanly place. He has forgotten to tell Theodora all this. Her answer to her Connor problem is an elopement. An elopement with mishaps, where the spurned suitor catches up with them. Connor is about to have his comeuppance, delivered by that supposedly biddable young woman. After a month's carousing Connor returns to find his targeted bride had fled the coop. This cannot be allowed to happen, she is after all the perfect bride; respectable, meek and mild--NOT! A delightful somewhat sensual romp with a goodly dose of humor! Dashing Scottish privateer Conner Douglas must marry a respectable, well-born woman; and soon, if he wants to secure his rightful inheritance. Determined to still explore the high seas as well as his mistresses' beds, he aims to find a pliable wife who'll turn a blind eye to his antics. And he knows just the woman, childhood friend and mousy spinster Miss Theodora Cumberbatch-Snowe. Unbeknownst to Conner, meek and plain Theodora has been hopelessly in love with him for years. But unwilling to wait forever for what will never happen, Theodora plans to wed a kind, if unexciting, local landowner, leaving behind the wild Highlander of her dreams. Yet Conner refuses to let his perfect wife get away. He chases her to Gretna Green and is shocked to discover the real Theodora is an ardent and wildly sensual woman. Soon he realizes his passion to win her has nothing to do with securing his inheritance and everything to do with earning the love of the unforgettable woman. The ensuing adventure as Conner joins the engaged couple on their trip to Gretna Green is laughable sometimes and heartbreaking at others. All Thea wants in a home to settle down in and Conner wants to be at sea. Add in Lance, Thea's fiancee and Jane, the woman hired as her companion for the trip and romance is in the air.
I received an advanced copy of this book in return for an honest review. ( )
