Yuu Watase, the immensely popular writer/artist of the shôjo(girls) fantasy smash Fushigi Yûgi: The Mysterious Play, has turned her creativity and wry sense of humour to the horror genre with her anime/manga hit Ceres: Celestial Legend. Aya thought she was a normal teenager until she discovered that she can transform into a vastly powerful "heavenly maiden" named Ceres...But Ceres is furious and out for revenge! Chidori Kuruma wants to help her sickly younger brother fulfill his dream of flying. In order to do so, she travels to Tokyo to enlist the aid of Ceres. Unfortunately, Chidori and her brother have a strange connection to the Mikage family and the nefarious C-Project. There's much more to Chidori than meets the eye. Although Ceres would technically be the good guy because she is supposed to be stopping the C-Project, she is playing games with people's hearts which makes me question her. Also can we say INCEST, I hate it when series rely on incest as a plot twist, but since Ayi and Aki are twins I guess it will feature heavily.

In this installment of Ceres we meet Chidori, whose brother is in the hospital. Chidori believes meeting Ceres and flying through the air will make him remember his dreams of flying airplanes and inspire him to keep trying to walk again. ( )

Volume 4 introduces a pair of new characters, Chidori and her paralyzed brother. The Evil Mikage corporation has begun to systematically "awaken" people's innate celestial powers, without regard to the repercussions. I like Chidori's character, but not the fact that she's drawn and interpreted by all the characters to be in elementary school when she's really a high schooler. That trope has never sat well with me and Chidori demonstrates how it's problematic as she's given the power to transform into her much more adult-looking super-powered form at will, thereby nullifying any worry of her emerging as a loli object. Annotation: Aya and Yuhi are approached by Chidori Kuruma, a young girl looking for Ceres. She wants her help for her hospitalized little brother. At the hospital they are surprised to meet Toya disguised as a doctor. It’s another Mikage plot to capture the powers of the celestial tennyo, the heavenly maidens.

More sidebar musings from (4:37)
…the series is going to be really dark, but there are still lots of things that show it’s not all bad for mankind.

I hope that young boys and girls don’t lose heart. You can change the future. Each of you has that power. Wait until you are older to start thinking about the futility of it all. And I’ll have Aya doing her best too. This is an age [the present, 1996-1997] when parents and children kill each other, and people with money and power use underhanded methods to get what they want. The Mikage Family is representative of those things for me. ( )
