Book number six in this very entertaining series is the first one where one of the alpha wolves falls for a human. I enjoyed Maddox, the grumpy alpha, falling for one of the owners of the town's diner – despite the fact he has no plans to ever do more than one-night stands. Daren isn’t just your average human, and he's definitely not submissive – but he is ready to have some fun! And that is where the next twist on existing werewolf lore comes in: when Daren ends up bitten by one of the enemy wolves, his body rejects the change. What follows is a creative and interesting exploration of the consequences.

Daren is overworked, stressed out, and ready to hire more help for the diner. He is also shocked when Maddox comes onto him, but since he's quite impressed with the guy, he more than goes along with the gruff-looking biker type. Unfortunately, that alerts the rival packs to his presence, and when he gets bitten as they attempt to kidnap him, he is in deep trouble. Seeing him reject the transformation, then learning to deal with being a wolf, was definitely filled with tension and, I thought, very interesting. And Daren, true to character, does not just take it lying down!

Maddox is a fun character, and I'm happy he finally got his own story. He looks like a biker, has a couple of piercings, and likes to project a rather grumpy image. This quote says it all: "He didn’t consider himself to be a people person, which suited him just fine since most individuals who entered the shop he worked at part-time weren’t interested in being chatty. The ones who did want to talk could usually either be ignored or glared at until they went away." Yeah, I can well imagine! Deep down he's a great guy though, and would do anything to protect Daren. He has a little trouble with the fact that Daren ends up saving him, but deals with it rather well.

The alphas from the rival packs, idiots one and all, are turning into a real nuisance. Ross, one of the omegas, even ends up kidnapped – and I'm going to have to wait for the next volume to find out what happens to him. Not fair! Luckily, the wait won’t be too long. If you're looking for another shifter story with a slight twist, if you enjoy reading about mates who immediately fall into lust then have to learn how to live together, and if you like books with some hot and heavy man-on-shifter action, then you will probably like this novella.

I've been waiting to learn more about Maddox and I was not disappointed. I love the character and I love that they've added yet another element to the pack. So far it has just been born luna wolves, a bear shifter, a halfbreed and regular werewolves. Now we have the human element and the process of turning a human. I was starting to wornder if that was even a thing is this world of Marcy Jacks has created because it wasn't so much as even mentioned until now. Well done, can't wait for the next story! ( )
