Third book in the series; again, the minor problems are adding up to major ones. Minor, side puzzles in the second book are now front and center...and between the dragon, and burning down the school to keep Ves and Jay out, and the mystery of the disappearing people and what that implies, what's discovered is a lot of problems and major complications. Nearly anything I could say is a spoiler...but I will say that this was written as an online serial, and it's definitely that - there are no real conclusions here, everything leads to the next book. Which will lead to the next...etc. This is not a bad thing, and it's not cliffhangers (they get off the cliff they're hung on before the end), but there's no real conclusions happening so far. I'm still interested and looking forward to the next story. ( )

A new-ish urban fantasy series from Charlotte E English. Having enjoyed the Tales of Aylfenhame historical fantasy series, I took a punt on this one. Cordelia “Ves” Vesper works for the Society of Magickal Heritage rescuing endangered magical animals, rare books and artifacts.

In book 1, she has to discover what is happening in various troll enclaves which is turning their inhabitants into mindless eating machines.

In book 2, she has to out exactly why one of the books she 'rescued' from Farringale is so chatty and a race to beat a rival organisation to a 15th century grave

In book 3, she has to investigate a spriggan enclave to find out who is breeding banned magical beasts.

I didn't like this series very much at all - it's very cutesy and comes across as YA with the emphasis on 'young' (very sparkly rainbow 'My Little Pony'). Book 4 has just been released, but I don't think I shall continue reading unless I score a free copy from somewhere.
