NATIONAL BESTSELLER * Who is Mister Magic? Former child stars reunite to uncover the tragedy that ended their show--and discover the secret of its enigmatic host--in this "skin-crawling story of pop culture fandom and '90s nostalgia" (Melissa Albert, author of The Hazel Woods) from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Hide. "It meets The Stepford Wives in this wildly compelling story that explores whether it's possible to recapture the magic of childhood."--Mallory O'Meara, Los Angeles Times bestselling author of The Lady from the Black Lagoon Thirty years after a tragic accident shut down production of the classic children's program Mister Magic, the five surviving cast members have done their best to move on. But just as generations of cultishly devoted fans still cling to the lessons they learned from the show, the cast, known as the Circle of Friends, have spent their lives searching for the happiness they felt while they were on it. The friendship. The feeling of belonging. And the protection of Mister Magic.   But with no surviving video of the show, no evidence of who directed or produced it, and no records of who--or what--the beloved host actually was, memories are all the former Circle of Friends has.  Then a twist of fate brings the castmates back together at the remote desert filming compound that feels like it's been waiting for them all this time. Even though they haven't seen each other for years, they understand one another better than anyone has since.  After all, they're the only ones who hold the secret of that circle, the mystery of the magic man in his infinitely black cape, and, maybe, the answers to what really happened on that deadly last day. But as the Circle of Friends reclaim parts of their past, they begin to wonder: Are they here by choice, or have they been lured into a trap?  Because magic never forgets the taste of your friendship. . . .… (mais)

Really was looking forward to this, but ultimately it wasn't my cup of tea. Interesting premise...love the 90s TV show reunion setup. Not at all scary and kinda one-dimensional characters. Finished it, but only because I hoped it would go somewhere interesting. It never did. Now debating whether I want to read Hide. Who doesn't like an abandoned amusement park as a setting? But fool me twice and all that. ( )

Really interesting premise, ultimately gets a little muddy and, not sure confusing is the right word but it doesn't have as satisfying a resolution as I'd hoped. ( )

An unexpected gem. Kept me interested and scared throughout. ( )

This was a weird one and I almost didn't know how to rate it. I wanted it to stay "down to earth" but had a feeling it was going to go into left field a bit, which it did. However, the theme of it and then understanding that the author grew up Mormon, kind of made the whole book make way more sense. And I loved the theme of be who you are and don't conform to what people tell you to be. Eh, talking this out, I think I want to rate this more 4 stars than 3.5 like I originally had. The creativity of this author to go from, this is my life experience and I left a strict religion who was telling me to be who I wasn't or if you don't fit this mold then it's not OK - but to go from that and end up at this story is really actually kind of incredible. I love the 90's TV theme and the old TVs and VCR tapes. Brought back some good ol' nostalgia. I don't know if I would go around recommending this book, but I did read it pretty quickly because I wanted to find out what was going on. And I liked the creepy vibes. The ending was just a little over the top and "out there" for me. But the message came through loud and clear! ( )

I requested this from NetGalley because of how much I enjoyed another of Kiersten White's novels several years ago, but alas this did very little for me.

Readers familiar with internet creepypasta will recognize the premise of Mister Magic as a take on the "Candle Cove" story—an old children's show that sticks in people's memories but isn't well recorded, sinister or just plain strange depending on who is doing the remembering. Like many scary stories, its strength is in its ambiguity—attempts to expand or conclude the story fall flat, especially because they take the tone from understated realism to explicit fantasticism. The possibility of horror is more effective than any horror in particular.

While I wouldn't say White's take is unambiguous—I was pretty confused about what was going on pretty much the whole time—it fails in similar ways. Frankly, it just wasn't very scary. I wish White had either kept the tone more grounded and let the horror elements hide in the background or else embraced the horror-fantasy concept and ditched any attempts to ground the story in believability. As is, I felt very aware that I was reading a story and that the story wasn't very good. ( )
