Most of my working life has been in the Canadian Arctic and this has made me curious as to how any complex organization was managed over the great spaces of the north prior to modern telecommunication. This has taken me to an interest in the Hudson Bay Company and therefore to this particular book.
It is certainly to be recommended if only to find out about Simpson's remarkable expenditure of energy used in running the HBC for as long as he did. However, the book also disappoints as it is neither a full autobiography, you are left feeling oddly disconnected from the man, nor is it a complete history of how the man ran the HBC. Nevertheless it is worthwhile reading for anyone interested in Canadian history.
