Dave Barry meets The Secret Lives of Dogs in Emily Yoffe's funny and insightful look at all things canine. Filled with adventures of heroic dogs, lovable and lazy dogs, malodorous dogs, phlegmatic and incontinent dogs, What the Dog Did delivers some of the most outlandish and certainly the funniest dog stories on record. "Laugh-out-loud funny."-O: The Oprah Magazine "Yoffe has long been one of the little-known treasures of American journalism-a comic virtuoso who is willing to endure any indignity if it will leave the reader weeping with laughter...For anyone who can't get enough of her, which includes me, What the Dog Did is an embarrassment of riches. This book will appeal to those who are happy to risk rib damage from laughing out loud, but it deserves a broader audience as well."-Chicago Tribune "Yoffe chronicles her gradual conversion to full-blown dog lover with amusing and frustrating episodes of doggie care."-Washington PostEmily Yoffe, a journalist and contributing writer to Slate.com, lives in Washington, D.C., with her husband and daughter and their beagle, Sasha. The best dog books are as much about people as they are about dogs, and What the Dog Did is one of the best."-Jon Katz, author of The Dogs of Bedlam Farm

This mostly met my needs for a good hearted, but not sappy animal story and the fact that it was set up as many chapters that served as short stories meant I could put it down and come back to it or just read on thru. Great for the busy Holiday times. I laughed and was saddened by the characters. By the time I read it the book was 18 years old and still maintained its character and humor. ( )

woman who had no dog experience, since a bad experience in her youth, takes on a Beagle. Good, funny stories about living with a dog ( )

Excellent!

The book includes a variety of touching, funny, and sad stories about pets from a variety of different owners. The book literally made me "laugh out loud" on numerous occasions. As the owner of a 4 month old black lab puppy, I found it both comforting and reassuring to read about other pet owners that struggled to house break and train their pets.

I would definitely recommend this book to others-- especially to pet owners!

This was without a doubt the funniest book I have ever read - and that includes all of David Sedaris. I laughed out loud and read excerpts aloud to anyone who would listen. Ms. Yoffe's conversion from cat person to hard-core dog owner and foster care provider was hysterical. Her personal stories are funny enough but what she shares from the lives of others is a riot. What made it particularly funny is that she saw the humor in her own behavior - there's nothing better than a self-depreciating dog owner - so many are self-righteous and nuts, I found her refreshing! A must read! ( )
