Elizabeth George writes crime fiction; here she offers a `how to' manual for fiction writers. She distinguishes art from craft in writing, maintaining that the craft can be taught, and giving instructions in the first 14 chapters regarding characters, setting, plot, landscape, start, viewpoint, dialogue and scenes. Lengthy passages are quoted by way of illustration, mostly from crime novels, many from her own, as well as frequent excerpts from her Journal of a Novel. The last 8 chapters are autobiographical, describing her own writing development and process. Suitable for reading and discussion by groups of aspiring writers, or particular fans of George, but not for normal reading groups.
