(1. George) Norman Douglas was born in 1868, educated at Uppingham and in Germany, and spent some early years in the Diplomatic Service, chiefly in St Petersburg. He spent much of his life as an involuntary expatriate in his nonetheless beloved Italy. Pilaff Bey was a pseudonym he used for Venus In The Kitchen.
