“She closes her eyes, and what swims to the surface is an image of the glacier the other day, all those ashes floating off, black pinpricks against stark white sky, like the opposite of stars” (287).

Like the characters, their relationships, and their circumstances, this whole book feels like a series of involuntary pushes and pulls, stopping and going, forward momentum and stagnant spaces. There’s a constant sad frustration, a frosty glaze over each page, especially between father and daughter whose relationship feels frozen, stuck in a rut.

As Greta and Conrad grieve for Helen (mother, wife, glue) in their own ways, it’s easy to also long for her presence, knowing she would mediate, referee, alleviate. But part of getting unstuck is learning how to adjust to their family’s changing dynamics: How can they be a family without Helen? How can they reconcile their fragile, bruised relationship? How can two opposites—a risk-taker and a risk-container, a dreamer and a realist, an astronomer and an oceanographer—come to common ground, even if that ground is a large iceberg in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness?

What I Like:
• I love a story about family dynamics, especially with a little dysfunction. This one isn’t quite dysfunctional but definitely includes interesting dynamics: who gets along, who doesn’t; who’s alike, who’s not.
• Music and musings about the steerage of life’s course make this novel feel warmly layered—the way a good literary fiction should feel.
• The structure of the story takes place over the weeklong cruise, sections divided by days as we slowly sojourn with these stuck-in-place characters on a moving boat (er, ship).
• The Alaskan setting is the perfect backdrop for these characters and their situations: a little gray, a little lonely, a little magical—full of wild and wonder.

I didn’t realize this was YA when I put it on the hold list but that turned out OK because this was a quick breezy read that I finished in one sitting. Like most YA its a little predictable and hokey but I admit that I like that sometimes.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you won Powerball? That’s what happens here as Alice buys a ticket for her friend/crush Teddy as a birthday present during their senior year of high school. The ticket wins and then things change.....but for the better or worse? You’ll have to read and find out.

I admit I was a little bored with Hadley's inner turmoil and skimmed a lot of this book, but what I did actually read (anything involving dialogue or Oliver) was pretty cute and entertaining. The turmoil bits are about Hadley's difficulty with her parents' divorce, but I thought the author made it pretty easy for Hadley to work through it. The book takes place over 24 hours, so the character growth can seem a little unrealistic. Whatever. You're reading this book to fantasize about falling for a cute boy on a long flight.

I normally always like this books by this author and this book did not disappoint me. I really was so invested in this story and also the characters. I also really liked the duel POV for these characters. Also the concepts of traveling throughout america was a really fun troup that kept me engaged from page one. The characters themselves a budding film maker and a setuplet was such a awesome paring. It made me really happy this book. I read it rather fast and really enjoyed it. I loved how this book tackled alot of self discovery issues on both sides of the story. I really enjoyed this read and thought it was a prefect summer themed read!

Such a cute summer read. I love the hollywood vibe meets summer beach town. I ALSO LOVE the email meet cute and the constant talk about the pets. I really enjoyed the romance and hope to read the follow up novel soon. I wish there would have been more emails to start the chapter or more emails that showed the start of their relationship but really cute.

I had just finished Jann Wenner’s memoir when the news of his interview with The New York Times broke. I was six when Rolling Stone was first published and had a print subscription for a long time. I decided to read the book less because I interested in Wenner himself as I was in the time period and culture in which he created the magazine: the music, the people, the events. There were lots of good stories that fostered my own memories.

The memoir was long and seemed to drag at points. Wenner was clearly a proud man who likes being rich and well-known and dropping lots of names. It was very different from Elton John’s funny, often self-deprecating story of his own life that I read last year.

And then, just after I finished the book, the interview dropped where Wenner pushed back when asked why all the “masters” featured in his new book were white men. Women and people of color were not articulate enough; they weren’t the philosophers of rock and roll, according to Wenner. Seriously? The interviewer was shocked and mentioned a long list of musicians like Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder, all of whom Wenner brushed aside as not meeting the lofty criteria for his book.

And then came the real ugliness, the view into Wenner’s soul: he guessed he should have picked a woman and a black man so he could have avoided these kinds of questions even though they would not have measured up to all these amazing white men. Oh, FFS.

The rest of the interview isn’t much better: Wenner should be proud of his work, but his pride spills over into arrogance. He seems incapable of self-reflection.

The repercussions were swift. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that he co-founded kicked him off the board immediately, and a literary festival appearance was cancelled. After a day, the inevitable apology was offered. He spoke badly chosen words, he said, and accepted the consequences.

Craig Seymour, writing in The Guardian after the interview and the apology, reviewed the sexist, racist history of Rolling Stone and rock journalism in general, the not-so-secret history that Wenner “let slip” in the interview.

For me, it’s the apology that continues to wrankle. He is sorry he said what he said. Why? He made it clear in the interview that he knew exactly what he was saying. Even doubled down on it when the interviewer pressed him. So, why apologize? Why not be honest about how you feel, that you wrote the book so you got to choose, and you stand by your statements as horrible as they are. Because, I’ll be honest: I don’t think he is sorry.

Thirty-six year old Greta James is forced to go on an Alaskan Cruise with her father and a group of her parents’ friends. This was originally intended to be an anniversary trip for her parents - a trip that her late mother had been planning for and was looking forward to for a long time. Her mother’s sudden demise, three months ago, came as a shock to everyone who knew her and has left both Greta and her father submerged in their own grief.

Greta is an indie musician by profession. Her relationship with her father is complicated (and has been so ever since she was a teenager) as a result of his disapproval of her life and career choices. While her mother,Helen, was a constant source of support and never failed to cheer her on, her father chose to remain on the sidelines. But now, forced to spend time together on an eight-day cruise they are made to address past resentments and the strain in their relationship while trying to come to terms with their loss. Greta’s professional life has also suffered a setback on account of her having an emotional breakdown onstage during her last performance, seven days after her mother’s death which was splashed all over the media. Greta’s next performance is days away and she has a lot to figure out in order to move forward .She also meets Ben, a scholarly professor separated from his wife and the father of two young daughters, who is traveling alone while promoting his latest book. Will this trip help her heal and give her an opportunity to mend her relationship with her father or will it lead to further friction? Will Greta be able to salvage her career or will she have to give up on her dreams?

The Unsinkable Greta James by Jennifer E Smith is a moving story about family, loss, grief, healing and moving on. Losing a loved one is never easy and everyone has to go through a very personal process of healing. The author's depiction of Greta's journey will touch your heart. I found the heartfelt conversations between Ben and Greta to be profoundly insightful. Her interactions with him are sweet, romantic and cathartic for Greta allowing her moments of pause and reflection. The author's portrayal of Greta and her father Conrad , both overwhelmed with their own grief and unable to acknowledge or understand or share in each other's pain, is very real. The author eloquently describes the emotions of the main characters and the dynamics of the parent-child relationship with quiet dignity. The vivid imagery of the natural beauty of Alaska and Glacier Bay make for a breathtaking backdrop to this lovely story. Though there was a bit of repetition and a few slow moments in the narrative, overall this is a beautifully-penned and engaging read, heavy in emotion with moments of wit and humor, that will leave you smiling through your tears.

Thanks to Random House-Ballantine and NetGalley for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book from the very start, the way Graham and Ellie act is really cute. They have an adorable banter, I really enjoyed reading it. The intrigue of Ellie’s old life is just great. All of the misunderstandings and twists made this a fun contemporary read. All of the things you learn about the characters give it that much more depth. I highly recommend.

To steal from the author..it was a great week, an unexpected week. The story is so much more complicated than that it was a strange week on a boat [A SHIP!] with a grieving rock star and her grieving father. A sad week, a hard week - and the ending was so incredibly predictable...but what do you expect from what others have identified as "chick lit" - well written and engaging to read.

This colorful and cheery book follows a large creature who has the same routine every day and likes things just the way they are. Then the large creature encounters a smaller creature and tries to teach him the routines he follows. The smaller creature follows the habits at first but then decides to break the mold and do things his own way. The large creature is overwhelmed by this initially until he discovers that he can try and even enjoy new things. This book opens up the opportunity for great conversations with students. The text is easy to follow and relatable. The illustrations are fun and cheerful and students will enjoy reading about the creatures and how they find a new way together.

As an Enneagram 6, I resonate with being a creature of habit. Routines are comforting. And yes, I admit to getting bogged down in them sometimes.....just as Creature does. This book should help with the the reminder that habits are good. But so is shaking it up a bit!
