"Meet Yinka: a 30-something, Oxford educated, British Nigerian woman with a well-paid job, good friends, and a mother whose constant refrain is "Yinka, where is your huzband?" Yinka's Nigerian aunties frequently pray for her delivery from singledom, her girlfriends think she's too traditional (she's saving herself for marriage!), her sister thinks she needs to get over her ex already, and the men in her life...well, that's a whole other story. But Yinka herself has always believed that true love will find her when the time is right. Still, when her cousin gets engaged, Yinka commences Operation Find A Date for Rachel's Wedding. Aided by a spreadsheet and her best friend, Yinka is determined to succeed. Will Yinka find herself a husband? And what if the thing she really needs to find is herself? With shades of Bridget Jones' Diary and Jane Austen herself, Yinka, Where is Your Huzband? brilliantly subverts the traditional romantic comedy with an unconventional heroine who bravely asks the questions we all have about love. Wry, acerbic, moving, this is an #OwnVoices love story that makes you smile but also makes you think--and explores what it means to find your way between two cultures, both of which are yours"--… (mais)

Every nationality has family members who pressure singletons to marry, then follow up with the push to have children, but it seems Nigerian aunties are in the Olympic medalist echelon. The charming if immature, Yinka is delightful and ends up searching for a job and a boyfriend at the same time. This 31 year-old woman is smart, an Oxford graduate, yet lacks self-confidence and believes social media opinions of what a beautiful Black woman should look like. Blackburn’s debut is not a perfect book but it's witty and has believable characters. It is set in London's Nigerian community. ( )

Listened to an audio version of this which really added to the experience because the voice actor was great with the various dialects in the story. I love a book that teaches me something about culture and society, as well as a narrative that involves reflection and growth. ( )

Yinka is an Oxford educated British Nigerian woman in her 30s. When her cousin becomes engaged, Yinka's family asks -- Yinka, where is your huzband? Yinka finds out that her ex-boyfriend will be at the wedding, so she plans Operation Wedding Date to get a date so that she can show her ex that she is dating. However, she begins to compromise herself. Her family and friends are concerned that she is changing.
Many of the parts of this book are laugh-out-loud funny, while other parts are sad, as you recognize that Yinka is trying to adjust to fit someone else's ideals. Ultimately, Yinka takes stock of what she is doing.
I really enjoyed this novel. ( )

Truth be told, I liked the title better than the execution. This is a romance that takes place within the Nigerian community in London, where Yinka is surrounded by friends and aunties who are appalled that she is still single at 30. It's a familiar story which reminded me of Calling All Aunties a bit too much. The exposure to the culture is very enjoyable; however, in comparison to the Yop City graphic novels (llok for them!) set in the Cote d'Ivoire in Africa, Yinka is weak sauce. A good enough beach read. ( )
