"From the beloved bestselling author of Ask Again, Yes, an unforgettable novel about a couple in a small town and the complexities of marriage, family, longing, and desire. Malcolm Gephardt, handsome and gregarious longtime bartender at the Half Moon, has always dreamed of owning a bar. When his boss finally retires, Malcolm stretches to buy the place. He sees unquantifiable magic and potential in the Half Moon and hopes to transform it into a bigger success, but quickly realizes that making margins won't be easy. His smart and confident wife, Jess, has devoted herself to her law career. After years of trying to have a baby, she is struggling to accept the idea that motherhood may not be in the cards for her. Like Malcolm, she feels her youth beginning to slip away and wonders how to reshape her future. Award-winning author Mary Beth Keane's new novel takes place over the course of a week when Malcolm learns shocking news about Jess, a patron of the bar goes missing, and a blizzard hits the town, trapping everyone in place. With a deft eye and generous spirit, Keane explores the disappointments and unexpected consolations of midlife, the many forms forgiveness can take, and what it means to be a family"--… (mais)

Audiobook

Melancholy story about a 40-ish couple struggling with the disappointment of their lives and trying to figure out how to make the best out of the time left ahead. There’s a mysterious subplot too that takes you out of midlife crisis mode a little bit but that plot has similar themes about wanting to escape from suburbia.

I got this book recommend to me by one of my online book club sites and although it kept my attention it was a little slow to develop with any plot line. I found myself lost at the end as to how the main characters came up with the solution to the bars problem and theirs. ( )

I read this book on a13 hour flight. from Paris to San Francisco and it help the time go quickly. I just finished reading another Keane novel which I enjoyed. This book deals with. marriage and all the ups and downs that make it both wonderful and not. It takes place in the same New York suburban town of Gillam as did ( Ask Again, Yes) her previous novel. Malcolm and Jess are married and the story is told through both of her their narratives and contains shifting time lines so it requires. attention on the part of the reader. It deals with different work. levels coming together(lawyer, bar owner) and the problems of living in your hometown where everybody knows everybody. I felt for Malcolm and Jess as they both tried to support the other's dream. The book threw in a side plot involving one of the bar's characters which worked for me and helped in tying up the novel. The book showed how having children, your own business, and living in. your childhood town are not black and white decisions and the grayness makes for interesting choices along with positive and negative outcomes. The book worked for me. Having read 2 Keane novels in a month, I strongly recommend her and will try to read everything she has written. ( )

Malcolm and Jess fell in love and Jess became pregnant. They married quickly, but sadly, Jess miscarried. Now, Jess is on a mission to have a baby. Malcolm has always loved the bar, The Half Moon, and agreed to purchase it from the owner. But, he didn't carefully consider the purchase, and he made the decision without telling Jess. The financial problems of the bar, the pressure that Jess feels to have a child, the temptation of people wanting both Malcolm and Jess continues to build until it becomes impossible to ignore.
Jess and Malcolm's story is one of navigating through the pressures of life, and trying to decide if it is worth being with the one you married. Emotional story from the first page. ( )

Good story about Malcolm and Jess, their marriage, their hopes and dreams (which aren't entirely for the same things), how it all falls apart, and then seemingly comes back together again (perhaps a little too neatly.) The story line about the missing bar patron didn't seem to me like it fit in with the rest of the plot. Most characters are well drawn, and I could identify with them. ( )

But in the end you can only have one life. One at a time, at least. You could turn, you could pause for a while, but you couldn't go down two streets at once. The things they didn't end up doing, the places and people they decided against, all defined them as much as anything else, in the way negative space defines a photo or a song. The lives they didn't lead were there, too, always with them. Only recently did he begin to see the shape those choices had made.
