In this book we get to see a collection of poems that are rhythmic. We also see this can be used when talking about shapes. Its a great connection between shapes and poetry. I think this can be used in primary level elementary, as the poems are simple and they rhyme, can be sang to children, or clapped along to. Primary levels also are in the process of learning about shapes and about the world around them so I would say this would be great for that! ( )

Great book that points out different shapes found in nature. This book could be used in the classroom as an introduction to poetry. It could also be used in a science class when discussing nature and in math class when teaching students about shapes. ( )

Shape Me A Rhyme by Jane Yolen is very similar to her other book Count Me A Rhyme. It's a book of poems about shapes instead of numbers. It's 12 poems about shapes like circle, heart, star, oval, rectangle, square, etc. The author was very creative with the illustrations. For example, when the author was writing about the circle, she had the poem written inside it but also she had the sun on the other page. That shows readers what real life things we see everyday that is a circle. She does this with every other shape too. It's very neat to see what the author picked to say a heart looked like or a coil. Everything was set in nature so she had to think really hard about what could look like a triangle, what looks like a heart, etc. These illustrations are also photos taken out in nature. These poems are very simple and would be great for younger kids just beginning to learn poetry because they are not hard at all to understand but too simple for older kids. Shape Me a Rhyme by Jane Yolen (2007) is a concept book that describes different shapes using poems. Each shape takes up two pages showing a photograph of the shape in real life and a traditional shape on the other page. For example, the first page describes circles. A short poem if found inside a circle surrounded by other words like round and halo. This is a quality children's book because of its ability to teach shapes in a creative and engaging way. It builds vocabulary and includes many rhyming words.

I would use this book in a classroom to teach shapes and build vocabulary. Several read alouds could be done focusing on one shape at a time. Students could create lists of all the object that look like a specific shape or think of other words that represent a shape. ( )
