"I "I have to confess, right up front here, that you will not find a great deal in the way of poetic vision in these stories, or singing prose, or deep insight into character. Nor are these stories that will tell you much that is new to you about the human condition. These are stories in what is now pretty much a lost tradition in science fiction, the simple and unselfconsciously fast-paced adventure story of the pulp-magazine era. They are stories from the dawn of my career, which began in the closing years of that era, and are straightforward tales of action, in the main, that were written partly for fun and partly for money." -Robert Silverberg, from the Introduction Não foram encontradas descrições de bibliotecas. |

The reminiscinces of his start is as entertaining as the stories themselves. I particularly liked the parts about when Randall Garrett showed up and helped kick Silverberg's budding career into overdrive. So that is where I found the value in reading this.
There are not amazing treasures here. These are stories that Silverberg churned out for Fantastic, Imaginative Tales, Amazing Stories and low level science fiction mags, often in a day or several hours to work through college, pay the rent and allow him to be a writer. They are pulp stories of their times, action adventure stories that are scarcely written anymore, but enjoyable in their own way. The best of these are what I would call lightweight fun tales. No deep insights into the human condition. Just light entertainment. The earliest story in the book, "Yokel
with Portfolio", is the 3rd story Silverberg ever sold. Some of this stuff, however, such as "Citadel of Darkness" is so preposterous. But even with the absurd stuff, a romp such as "Cosmic Kill", the longest story in the book, is undeniably entertaining on a certain action-adventure level.
My favorite story here was titled "Exiled From Earth". It is not one of those action adventure types at all, but rather a serious, timeless story. I could actually see it appearing in a modern magazine even though it was first published in 1958.
I liked this collection more than I expected I would, and probably more than I should. I don't think I had heard of a single one of these stories before this collection. ( )
