When a fortuneteller's tent appears in the market square of the city of Baltese, orphan Peter Augustus Duchene knows the questions that he needs to ask: Does his sister still live? And if so, how can he find her? The fortuneteller's mysterious answer (an elephant! An elephant will lead him there!) sets off a chain of events so remarkable, so impossible, that you will hardly dare to believe it's true.

Meh. It was like DiCamillo was trying too hard to make this feel special. I found it annoying that it was so repetitive. The characters all say the same things over and over. The boy Peter is always taking his hat on and off.

And the worst part was the reader absolutely knows Peter's going to find his sister and the magician will send the elephant home so there was no real drama. The finding of the sister and sending home of the elephant were not even that exciting or interesting.

I'm a big fan of Winn-Dixie and Despereaux, so this was disappointing. ( )
