This beautifully illustrated essay details a man’s simple wishes for making daily life better for himself and those who surround him. The young man went on to become the Pope and was eventually canonized for his many humanitarian efforts. Introduction, Author’s Note.

I truly loved this children's book. I chose this book because I did not know anything about Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, but this book gave me a lot of knowledge in just one little short story. He was not only a great pilot, but a great writer and poet also. As a young child, all he could dream about was flying. His mother said it was dangerous, so he held off learning to fly for a bit until he was drafted into the aviation regiment as a mechanic. While working he knew he did not want to fix the planes, but learn how to fly them and that is just what he did even if it was against his mothers will. He flew for the regime for a couple years until he crashed his plane. Since he crashed he had to find another paying job, but he was not happy at all no matter how much money he was making. So, he found a job delivering mail by air to other countries and this is where he found his most love in flying. He had to stop during the night, so he stopped in the Arabian desert. He had always wrote to his mother, but this is where he found his love for writing stories and poems. Once life settles, down for Antoine, he becomes sad and lonely once again, so he writes and draws of a boy in his stories. I think this boy was him just in a new life; he was writing what he wished he could still do. The story of Antoine is very inspiring and inspirational. I think what he was trying to convey was no matter what always chase your dreams because they can lead to amazing and great things.½

Large format picture book. Just for today, I will try to live for this day alone, without wishing to solve my life's problems all at once.

The story of the author that sits behind the book I read twice for this class was a treat. He really does seem like a strange guy looking far away for something. I love the pictures and the layout of this book.

Well-done biography of an author drawing on the perspective of his most famous book. If you like "The Little Prince," then this additional look at Saint-Exupery's life is well worth the time. Illustrations reflect the Little Prince's commitment to fantasy and subtle absurdity.

I am biased when it comes to The Little Prince, so I loved this book about Antoine de Saint-Exupery. It begins with his childhood, and his dermas of going to far away lands. Readers find out what inspired to write The Little Prince. For example, I did not know that his wife was the rose in Little Prince. The first pages also have pictures of Antoine from childhood and adulthood. This books could be used as a way to get students to learn more about World Wars I and II as well as learn about the use of planes in the wars and planes used for mail. This book could also be used as an introduction to reading Little Prince or one of his other books that are also mentioned in the book. i think the theme is to follow your dreams, and the most important things are not material objects like money but rather love. I like the illustrations. There are a couple words that students will have to look up, but it is well written. Overall, I would recommend this to any English or history class, or anyone who enjoys Little Prince.

This book is about Marc Chagall finally became an artist after it being his dream for so long. This would be a great book to show students that they can always follow their dreams no matter what anyone says. This is also a great resource to teach students how to write biographies or autobiographies. It will give students ideas about how to write about themselves or someone close to them. Grades: 2-4

A richly imagined, poetic introduction to aviator and author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Beautifully illustrated in dreamlike images. See also Peter Sís's The Pilot and the Little Prince.

I am always on the lookout for good Catholic books for my school library. This book definitely fits the bill. Beautifully illustrated, this book brings Saint John XXIII's philosophy to life. This great man, had a wonderful, attainable philosophy, which still is useful to today's busy life. Every page provided a different gem and word of wisdom from the beloved pontiff.

The illustrations are a true gem here. Everywhere I look there are symbols and hidden things to explore and ponder the meaning about. What is their symbolism? Is it the illustrator's signature or are they symbolic to Catholicism or Saint John XXIII? The applications with students are endless. While stylistically Bimba Landmann's illustrations are not my favorite (mainly due to the yellow pallor of the subjects), there is so much to look at that I can't help but be intrigued by the narrative the illustrator has created. Landmann created almost a mythical world - a mix between the middle Eastern roots of Catholicism with the Italian world of Rome. I'm not quite sure what this world is, but I know I like it.

Bimba Landmann is at it again with another gorgeous picture book dedicated to Saint John XXIII. His words inspired Landmann's bright illustrations full of color and shadow. Overall, a beautiful book. I don't agree with all of the messages, but the images are what truly makes the story, so I can overlook the text when I have to.½

Based on the daily prayer of Pope St. John XXIII, "Just for Today" is a lavishly illustrated prayer book for young people. The text of the prayer -- a sort of "decalogue for daily living" -- includes simple reminders for how to go about living as a Christian in the world, including "I will not look to improve of discipline anyone other than myself," "I will adapt to circumstances, without expecting circumstances to adapt to my wishes," and "I will do a good deed and tell no one about it."

While grounded in Christian worldview and ethic, even nonbelievers will find something of value to "the good pope's" daily offering of his life.

"Just for Today" is a wonderful addition to any children's library and would make a great First Communion gift.

Disclaimer: I received a free pre-publication version of this book from LibraryThing's Early Reviewer program.

I received a copy of this book from Eerdmans via the Early Reviewers program. It is a beautifully illustrated book. The paintings are dreamlike and evocative. Upon reading it myself I thought "This is a picture book for adults, it only looks like a children's book". I appreciate the message of wisdom, which as another reviewer has pointed out, is universal enough to appeal to non-Catholics or even non-Christians, and combined with the gorgeous Mediterranean illustrations, it was a reading experience I could enjoy again and again. I then snagged a passing five-year-old to test the not-a-children's-book hypothesis. (Full disclosure: said five-year-old liked having Robert McCloskey's "Time of Wonder" read to her, and may have a penchant for evocative paintings and peaceful text.) She liked the book a great deal, although most of her comments and questions seemed to deal with the small blue deer that the child in the book carries around with him on every page -- there is enough visual interest in each illustration to keep a child captivated through multiple readings. It was a good enough book that I am considering preserving it for future reading by hand-binding the sheaf of loose pages that Eerdmans mails out for their ER books.

I received this lovely small unbound book via the early review program. The opening page states that when Angelo Roncalli, later Saint John XXIII, received his first communion, he noted "I want always to be good to everyone." Throughout his life he continued to hold steadfast to his original thought/feeling.

This book is a wonderfully illustrated book of his life-long intentions. The illustrations are quite lovely.
The text is eloquently written and serves as a reminder to life simply, love often and enjoy each precious day.

The papers were not bound, thus it was difficult to follow the pattern of the writing. This very much took away from the joy of the book. However, I liked the illustrations enough to follow more of the unique artistry.

Lovely Children's book setting the "Daily Decalogue of Pope St. John XXIII" - I am impressed with how beautiful the illustrations were, despite the fact that it wasn't my first preference for how people should be drawn in childrens books (it was a bit heavy handed on the brows in my opinion) but the overall effect of the illustrations is quite beautiful and peaceful and fits well with the text. This was my first introduction to the Daily Decalogue as well, and I think it's lovely to turn it into a childrens book, so perhaps children will learn some of these lessons early. A lovely peaceful little book.

Please Note: I got this book through the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program

Second Note: Eerdmans apparently doesn't bind (even with staples) their Early Reviewer books, so it's a grouping of pages that are not connected, and the cover is just as thin and easily bent. Because of this I will not be requesting any more Children's Books Early Reviewer copies from Eerdmans because I do not wish to have to count something that is clearly NOT a $20 value (and which if I want to keep a copy I will need to purchase a real copy) on my taxes as a $20 value just because that's what the Early Reviewers program says the worth of all ER books are according to the publishers. (I know this isn't unique to this book as I mentioned it to a colleague and before I even said who the publisher was, she said "I had one like that from Eerdmans once and never requested another childrens book from them" - so you have all been forewarned now.

But the book itself is fantastic. Just not the ER version :D

Such a precious book for adults and children alike. The words of Saint John XXIII have become my daily prayer. I can't wait to read it aloud to my newborn baby who will be arriving soon. Sounds so peaceful both for her and for me! This was my first introduction to Landmann's work, I am very much interested in finding some of her previous illustrated books!

This is an excellent example of a picture book for the whole family! It consists of ten resolutions, repetitively introduced "Just for today, I will..." and beautifully illustrated by Bimba Landmann. I have enjoyed Landmann's work since first finding "Clare and Francis." Her depictions of the ten daily goals reflect a modern take on a highly stylized approach heavily influenced by medieval art and illumination, including a touch of whimsy and suggesting a Mediterranean setting. Though penned by St. John XXIII, the Pope associated with Vatican II, these brief reflections are general enough to hold interest for non-Catholic and even non-Christian families, and the enchanting pictoral settings offer extensive re-reading and reflection opportunities.

For those readers who fell in love with [The Little Prince], this is a lovely biography written and superbly illustrated by [Bimba Landmann]. Eerdman's used a variety of finishes on the pages, which further enhances the visual feast with a tactile enjoyment.

The language Landmann employs is neither childlike nor too lofty. The illustrations are uncomplicated, yet require close attention to plumb their depths.

This was an unbound galley copy of a book to be published by Eerdman's. I highly recommend it for older children (10-12) who enjoyed reading, or having [The Little Prince] read to them, at a younger age.

In Search of the Little Prince by Bimba Landmann packs more punch from its gorgeous, sprawling illustrations than from its length. It's only a dozen pages or so which is ideal for a children's book, and from the looks of the layout it's trying to be more children's book than biography. There's nothing wrong with that even though I think it would be a little unusual to read this to your 5-year-old. The design is loosely based on its inspirational source, The Little Prince.

This mini-biography of author and pilot Antoine de Saint Exupéry gives a tender overview of the man who enlivened the imagination of the entire world. Contrarily, it's arguable whether In Search of the Little Prince should have included some of the more nuanced and darker elements of his life, children's book or not.
