Looking for a children's fantasy book series that was probably made in late 70's-through the 80's. I read it back in elementary school in the late 80's early 90's. I remember it being about a boy i want to say he was the youngest son of a king or something.I remember he was a squire to his older brother. And then 1 day he meets a wizard or something like that and he gets sent to wizard school. Main things i can remember is its 5-7 books and he does bad at school at first then gets better. And that he gets into a fight with his roommate who is great with magic. And that kid gets expelled and later in the series he fights him at some castle and that the cover had something to do with a bell.

I know this one s probably a hard 1 been searching for it for years and no one seems to remember. And just in case it wasn't released much I read it in Maine if that helps.

The Circle of Magic series by Debra Doyle and James D. MacDonald. Series link is here.

The first book is School of Wizardry.

Heh, glad I could help! It was one of my favorite series when I was in elementary school (around the same time as you, it appears), and I still have my copies.

Though it confused me for a bit since they came out with the books again in 2000 with different titles and book covers. Ended up ordering the new titles I hope that they didn't change the story at all.

You can buy the books secondhand on places like abe.com, alibris etc. so the originals are available...

To the best of my knowledge the story didn't change, they just changed the titles and covers (why, I don't know). I think my younger brother has copies of the reprints, but I've always gone for my original Troll releases. ^_^

There are two more books (7 and 8) that were only (or mainly) printed in Australia. I have 7 from there, but am still trying to acquire 8. And well, the editions don't match, of course.

They must have only been printed in Australia. I'd never heard of them before seeing the series, and I can find nothing about them anywhere describing plot or anything of the sort.
