This was one of the most delicious books I have read in years! I will be honest and say it took me several attempts to get into it, but once I did, I absolutely fell in love. Renée is the concierge of an elegant apartment building in Paris. While she is she is extremely intelligent and learned (an autodidact), she "dumbs down" in order to fit into the stereotype of concierge in the eyes of her tenants. She observes their lives from behind this ruse, and narrates with sharp wit and wry introspection. Paloma is the 12 year old daughter of one of the bourgeois families in the building; she is precocious and perceptive, and offers another clever perspective through which we get to know the residents of 7 rue de Grenelle. She also hides her true self, her intelligence and awareness of the adult world which surrounds her. The two don't have much to do with one another until a refined Japanese gentleman moves into the building, setting off a chain of events that will change Renée and Paloma forever. By the end, I was so enraptured by the story that a sudden and unexpected turn of events caused my heart to lurch and my eyes to fill with tears. I was at work at the time, but if I had been in the privacy of my car, or home, I would have wept. Humorous and clever, satisfying and astute. Muriel Barbery's prose is luxurious, elegant, and polished. My beloved aunt Susan, whose recommendations in the realm of literature I value beyond compare, likened this novel to fudge; taken in small helpings, it is an exquisite treat. Too much at once, however, can prove to be too rich. I could not agree more. At times cerebral and philosophical, the musings of Renée and Paloma were a lot to ingest. I alternated between the audiobook (in my car) and the paperback, and read in small portions (many of the chapters are only a page or two). In retrospect, I am glad it took me so long to get through; it allowed me the benefit of time and reflection while drinking in the story. There is a line at the very end that will surely stay with me forever: "[F:]rom now on, for you, I'll be searching for those moments of always within never." If you have read this novel, you'll understand why this resonates with me. What a wonderful, auspicious ending. At the bookstore, there is a mixed reaction to The Elegance of the Hedgehog (a magnificent title, once you understand the reference). Those who love it, really LOVE it and could discuss it endlessly. But there are many for whom it was too much, too rich, too heady, and it was abandoned. For this reason, I hesitate to recommend it to all. However, if the story piques your interest, and you are willing to work a bit at first, I can guarantee that you will not be disappointed. An exquisite read. I do have a copy that I would be willing to loan to someone who will promise to return it; it is most definitely a keeper. Renée is the concierge of a Parisian apartment block. Lonely and self-educated, she is more cultivated than many of the building's residents: though she never lets on. Indeed she goes to some lengths to hide this information. Only teenage Paloma shares her intellectual curiosity: though neither of them knows this about the other. Then a resident dies, and a new tenant moves in. And things will never be the same for Renée or Paloma. The story alternates between Renée's and Paloma's points of views. There are philosophical discussions threading through the narrative, which points up the essential 'Frenchness' of this story. From the point of view of the reader, it's a bit of a crash course in philosophy, and points up the many hypocrisies which many of us carry through our everyday lives. It's a clever book, and one which I found initially hard to get into. But it's moving and engaging, with sympathetic portrayals of some characters who are on first acquaintance, perhaps unsympathetic.
Barbery’s sly wit, which bestows lightness on the most ponderous cogitations, keeps her tale aloft. Le Figaro has described this book as 'the publishing phenomenon of the decade'. Elsewhere, there were comparisons to Proust. It sold more than a million copies in France last year and has won numerous awards. Does it match up to the hype? Almost. It is a profound but accessible book (not quite Proust, then), which elegantly treads the line between literary and commercial fiction. Even when the novel is most essayistic, the narrators’ kinetic minds and engaging voices... propel us ahead. Renée is a concierge at the rue de Grenelle. A building for the affluent. Paloma is an occupant. They are from different generations, and different ways of seeing the world. Both see a path for their life, and death. Both are forced to change their minds about how they choose to live. Finding meaning in life. For this book has a philosophical theme. As the characters express their thoughts and critiques on philosophy, and various aspects of life. They see the façades that people put on, and then proceed to describe the people without the façades. While others might have illusions about their lives and avoid reality, Renée and Paloma want to engage with reality. That means many of life’s aspirations will be disillusioned. But they have intellectual aspirations, to enrich their life.
Caveats?
The philosophy can be a bit random. Some of the philosophical thoughts and critiques might be more for those who already know the philosophy described and can add their own understanding to the ideas. ( )
