A strange, quirky collection of stories that at first disturbed me, but then I liked after I got into the rhythm. A silly side note - I absolutely love the color of the book! ( )Esta crítica foi escrita no âmbito dos Primeiros Críticos do LibraryThing. Most short story collections have ups and downs, and "Souvenirs" was no exception. The stories are full of invention, high-concept explorations of odd little concepts. It's a fun read, and a quick one, but not deep. I got the impression that the author was attempting magical realism at a literary level. There are occasional flashes of brilliance, but it is not sustained. The topics were sufficient, but the stories lack the beauty and precision of language required to elevate them to that higher status. At no point did the characterization get vivid enough to make the people memorable. Instead, I remember the concepts alone, and that is not enough for the writing to truly stick with me. It's worth a read, though, and Tompkins is worth watching. Whether this collection landed with me or not, his trajectory is a good one. Esta crítica foi escrita no âmbito dos Primeiros Críticos do LibraryThing. This cute little collection of short stories is deeper and stranger then I expected. As I read about a man taking drastic actions after seeing flames everywhere, a child's father evaporating, and knickknacks appearing in a woman's home, I couldn't help but think that the stories are not just fantastical. There seemed to be underlying possibilities or explanations that are up to the reader to define, interpret, or imagine. An amusing collection. Thank you to Matt Thompkins for writing these and to Conium Press for publishing them. Esta crítica foi escrita no âmbito dos Primeiros Críticos do LibraryThing. This was a superb little book of six short stories. The book went quick - which is a testament to how well it was written and how engaging the stories are. Though short, they are thought-provoking and leave you wanting more (in a good way). I plan to see out his other work...great stuff! Esta crítica foi escrita no âmbito dos Primeiros Críticos do LibraryThing. I got this book thru LibraryThing's Early Review program. This is a short little book of 6 short stories. They're quirky and surreal and right up my alley. My favorites are "The Water Cycle", that explores what happens when a boy's father suddenly evaporates one day, and the title story "Souvenirs", where nicknacks and literally random souvenirs start appearing in the narrator's apartment. A little small to warrant the proposed trade paperback pricing, in my opinion, but I'm glad that I was able to get a copy. It was a worthwhile read. 8/10 S: 7/15/16 - F: 7/17/16 (3 Days) sem críticas | adicionar uma crítica

Souvenirs is a fantastic, whimsical, darkly funny collection from Matt Tompkins, author of Studies in Hybrid Morphology. Não foram encontradas descrições de bibliotecas. |
