Fiction. Romance. Historical Fiction. HTML:

Georgette Heyer, the bestselling Queen of Regency Romance, brings her extraordinary plots and characterizations to an unexpected and delightful marriage of convenience love story.

Can the wrong bride become the perfect wife?

Adam Deveril, the new Viscount Lynton, is madly in love with the beautiful Julia Oversley. But he has returned from the Peninsular War to find his family on the brink of ruin and his ancestral home mortgaged to the hilt. He has little choice when he is introduced to Mr. Jonathan Chawleigh, a City man of apparently unlimited wealth and no social ambitions for himself—but with his eyes firmly fixed on a suitable match for his only daughter, the quiet and decidedly plain Jenny Chawleigh.

Praise for Georgette Heyer:
Georgette Heyer was one of the great protagonists of the historical novel in the post-war golden age of the form. Her regency romances are delightful light reading, and her historical novels such as The Spanish Bride and An Infamous Army demonstrate how fiction and history can work together to make a valuable literary form.—Philippa Gregory, bestselling author
"A five-star job of sheerly delightful romance writing."—Chicago Tribune

This is the story of a marriage of convenience that makes me feel how arranged marriages could work in the real world. The couple is marries for financial reasons, they manage to get along with each other and with mutual respect they gradually come to form a loving bond together.
A lovely, gentle story, there is little action in it but a great deal of introspection for the characters.

Adam Deveril, the new Viscount Lynton, returns from the Peninsular War to find himself faced with the necessity of providing for his sisters and settling his father's debts.

A wealthy marriage is the only answer to such problems but, with his affections already engaged, Adam at first sees little merit in the arrangement proposed by the plain-speaking Jonathan Chawleigh.

Practical, yet shy, Jenny Chawleigh knew Adam was not in love with her - but how she wished he could be... ( )

A surprisingly realistic take on love and marriage. None of her other books are like this. The real romantic feelings are reserved for the pursuit of money. ( )

I'd be a liar if I said that this book was flawless. I don't believe it was. But Heyer did something here that she hadn't really done in any other novel of her's that I'd read. She effectively and realistically chronicled the gradual growth and change of two human beings and their relationship.

There was so much that was real about these people and the relationship. To be sure, "love" is a nice icing on the cake. But there is so much more to a lifelong alliance than the "honeymoon"-style attraction. And I think Heyer effectively shows that here. I was drawn in to by the Austen-esque tributes but I stayed for the realism and the beautiful tapestry of camaraderie, trust, and respect.

So, while it doesn't hold up very well when compared to classics like Jane Eyre, To Kill a Mockingbird, and others, I would give it 5 stars because I think it represents Heyer's personal best. ( )

The library at Fontley Priory, like most of the principal apartments in the sprawling building, looked to the south-east, commanding a prospect of informal gardens and a plantation of poplars, which acted as a wind-break and screened from view the monotony of the fen beyond.
