2781 The Rise of Industrial America: A People's History of the Post-Reconstruction Era Volume Six, by Page Smith (read 4 Sep 1995) I had read volume 5 on Sept. 25, 1994, and intended to read this volume but was reminded to do so because Page Smith died 28 Aug 1995. This volume was not too good. He spends so much time quoting people that are fringe-y and radical, and I am not very radical any more. Some of the chapters are good: the one on the Great Strikes of 1877, the one on Haymarket, the one on Homestead, the chapter on 1893, the one on Coxey's Army, and the one on Pullman. But there was a lot of heavy going. He does not tell history the way I think it should be told, so this book cannot be called a joy to read. ( )
