This book covers the same time period and set of events from several different characters' points of view, which is a risky writing strategy to take. If done well, each retelling reveals details and nuance that help the reader understand the characters and their world better. If done poorly, each retelling leads to progressively more skimming to get to something we haven't read four times already. Unfortunately this book was the latter for me. I was simultaneously wishing the book was longer (so so many dropped plot threads that I wanted to know more about!) and shorter (I really don't need four identical versions of the exact same party). ( ) I received a copy of this book from Goodreads Giveaways in exchange for an honest review. Face was such an interesting read! It took my back to elementary school days when I read the Uglies/Pretties/Specials series - this is a grownup version that gave serious Black Mirror vibes. I would be really interested in a sequel or perhaps a partner story that follows the Menials or looks at the "lower tiers" of the story's society. I did find some of the characters a bit flat at times but feel like perhaps a sequel would flesh them out further. I also found the formatting interesting as the story followed the same period of time from the perspectives of different characters, giving the reader a more complete picture with each chapter/character's angle. Great dystopian/sci-fi read!! Face is a dystopic novel where putting your best "face" forward is EVERYTHING. The technology of the time is very advanced - something we could not even comprehend in today's day and age. Social acceptance is based on how perfect you are. The novel starts off slow, but does pick up by midway in. It is interesting story and did keep my attention throughout. sem críticas | adicionar uma crítica
"In Joma West's Face, Margaret Atwood meets Kazuo Ishiguro in this sci-fi domestic drama that reimagines race and class in a genetically engineered society fed by performative fame. How much is your Face worth? Schuyler and Madeleine Burroughs have the perfect Face-rich and powerful enough to assure their dominance in society. But in SchAddie's household, cracks are beginning to appear. Schuyler is bored and taking risks. Maddie is becoming brittle, her happiness ever more fleeting. And their menial is fighting the most bizarre compulsions. In Face, skin color is an aesthetic choice designed by professionals, consent is a pre-checked box on the path to social acceptance, and your online profile isn't just the most important thing-it's the only thing"-- Não foram encontradas descrições de bibliotecas. |
