So this was one of those books that are filled with short stories written by multiple authors. It was an interesting read, I love this sort of book. When it came to this book, obviously I had favorite stories but overall all the stories were well written. I would recommend this to other people in a heartbeat. If this was a type of book people would like. I believe that I would 100% read more books like this in a heartbeat. ( )
These are dark stoies about curses and witches and how you really have to be careful what you wish for. They're darker that I usually go for but they're interesting and well-written and I finished it looking at the authors and looking for more of their books. ( )
As someone who grew up with reading stories of the Grimm brothers and adores dark fairy tales, I was looking forward to reading these short stories. However, as far as I can tell (I didn't finish the book), there isn't a so-called classic fairy tale among them: a lot of them are mash-ups or modern twists on classic tales that I didn't get on with, such as Snow White mixed with Bluebeard, or a self-harming Red Riding Hood who turns into a werewolf. With the exception of Neil Gaiman's take on the troll in 'Three Billy Goats Gruff', they all lack appeal and atmosphere, and I gave up halfway through the fifth story and skim-read the rest to check if I could pick up the thread later in the book again. I had not read short stories in a while, so I picked this one up and remembered why I haven’t read short stories for a while. It is just not my thing. I need more to be able to engage fully with a book. But hey, that’s just me. That being said, there are a couple good ones in this compilation. My favourites were Neil Gaiman’s and MR Carey’s. Quirky, odd and sinister. All in all it’s a quick read, but not my cup of tea. Moving on. ( )
