That is, I totally vibed with Jane's preference for the BBC double-DVD version of Pride and Prejudice. I had a few laugh-out-loud moments while reading, particularly as one woman kept trying heartily to speak in what she seemed to think was Austenese. Or something. And I gradually became more intrigued by the "fantasy vs. reality" theme.
However, Jane is so back-and-forth and wishy-washy during her adventure. Sometimes the narrative itself is a little inconsistent, while at other times it's redundant, making the same points over again.
There's also some innuendo and romantic frolicking that isn't to my particular taste. A few moments (like one of the make-out sessions) would have made me abandon ship as a precaution if I hadn't seen this book recommended on multiple reader/library lists as a gentle read. Meaning, I knew ahead of time that none of the characters' frolicking would lead to a more "adult" level.
Still, with all of the back-and-forth—and then with the "fantasy vs. reality" tension stretching out to the point of overstaying its welcome with me, continuing on during what felt to me like too many endings to the story—I didn't feel fully convinced by the final ending.
But I do appreciate what Jane learns about herself in the ending (or pre-ending) before the two endings that come after it. I might check out the companion novel that follows this one if I'm in the mood for something light and fairly quick with a little Austen inspiration to it. We'll see.… (mais)
