Meh. It was fun spotting the Sherlock Holmes tropes, but that amusement only carries so far.

My Grave Ritual
G.S. Denning
This has Dr Watson and Warlock Holmes again solving mysteries and chasing bad guys! Dr Watson is the clue man and Warlock knows all the magic and crazy stuff! This has crazy stories that build up on each other.
Lots of witty dialogue and situations, hilarious at times, and enjoyable throughout! I listened to the graphic audio version from Chirp and it has sound effects and numerous narrators which made it super great! Fun book and series!

A Study in Brimstone
By G.S. Denning

I bought the first 3 books in the series from Chirp in the Graphic Audio addition which has lots of sound effects and numerous narrators. They were on sale for just a few dollars a piece. I was hoping they were good since I didn't know this author. I was so glad I bought them now and I am watching for any more to come on sale!

This is a hilarious take on Sherlock and Watson! Dr Watson is poor and down on his luck and by chance someone tells him of a place to stay. It's with Warlock Holmes. Yes, Warlock seems a bit nutty but he only wants one coin and that's all! No other rent money, ever! So Dr Watson gladly moves in.

This starts a very crazy bro relationship and so fun too! Warlock is not too sharp on social or common sense things but is a very powerful wizard. He can call upon demons to do his bidding at times. This is just a minor thing he does.

Warlock's friends include two Inspectors, a vampire and a Troll! These two are also very good friends but just as crazy as Warlock!
This is such a fun world! The book is a bunch of stories about them but they all build upon each other. Loved it. Terrific narration!

The Hell-Hound of the Baskervilles
By G. S. Denning
This continues the story of the crazy Warlock Holmes and Dr Watson. Watson is the clue finder and Holmes has all the magic. This time most of the story is around an adventure with a Canadian Lord with a curse. Throw in a Hell-Hound, demon horses, a succubus, and a butler that turns out to be a demon, and a serial killer on the loose.
Holmes doesn't want to go to this house on the moors, he actually looked disturbed by the thought of going there. Watson goes alone to guard the Lord while Warlock finds a way to fix the curse.
Just like book one, giggles ensue, occasionally out right laughter! This book is hilarious, witty, and a joy to read or listen. I got the Graphics Audio addition from Chirp that has multiple narrators and sound effects. They are so good!
It's really funny when Watson describes Canadians or Americans.

An enjoyable mashup of Sherlock Holmes and urban fantasy. It wasn't as laugh-out-loud funny as [b:Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch|12067|Good Omens The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch|Terry Pratchett|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1392528568s/12067.jpg|4110990]. Then again, nothing is.

I needed something that would be amusing, so I chose Warlock Holmes, The Hell-Hound of the Baskervilles. It was humorous, as you can no doubt tell from the titles of the stories.

The Adventure of the Blackened Beryls
Silver Blaze: Murder Horse
The Reigateway to Another World
The Adventure of the Solitary Tricyclist
The Hell-Hound of the Baskervilles

Sherlock Holmes meets magic with a heavy dose of Cthulhu. That is a nearly perfect mashup for me. And it did make me laugh during a time when I needed that mirth.

So I recommend it for those who have read the first book in the series: Warlock Holmes: A Study in Brimstone. If the mashup idea amuses you, start with the first book and continue.

This is a fun, imaginative blend of parody and pastiche featuring Warlock Holmes and his flatmate/narrator Dr. John Watson. It consists of one novella titled ‘A Study in Brimstone’ that spoofs – you guessed it – A Study in Scarlet along with five short stories that seem to be based on the Arthur Conan Doyle originals. (I recognized about half, probably because I’ve only read half of the Sherlock Holmes canon.) Although this is the first book in a five part series I thought it was entertaining enough by itself and wasn’t planning to go on to the next book. At least I wasn’t until I came to that hook on the last page…..½

Victorian London, Sherlock Holmes, steampunk pastiche, what could go wrong? What I failed to notice was that it was supposed to be humorous, so I went into the book unprepared.

It also was not a novel, but a novella and five short stories. All are parodies of Doyle's titles.

A Study in Brimstone (A Study in Scarlet)
The Adventure of the Resident Sacrifice (The Adventure of the Resident Patient)
The Case of the Cardboard ... Case (The Adventure of the Cardboard Box)
The Adventure of the Yellow Bastard (The Adventure of the Yellow Face)
The Adventure of the _eckled _and (The Adventure of the Speckled Band)
Charles Augustus Milverton: Soulbinder (The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton)

I loved the opening lines of the book, written by Dr. John Watson: THE DOMINION OF MAN IS DRAWING TO A CLOSE. THE age of demons is upon us. This, I recognize, is largely my fault and let me take just a moment to apologize for my part in it. I am very sorry I doomed the world. Really, just… absolutely, horribly sorry.

If it weren't for Dr. Watson, I would most likely have finished the book and never wanted to read another. As it is, I will get the sequel, just to see how he copes with the less-than-clever Warlock Holmes. I liked Grogsson and Lestrade as well. Mrs. Hudson .. the less said about her the better. Really. Trust me.

The humor can be over-the-top silly, which isn't my cup of tea. To understand some of the humor, you need to be familiar with the Sherlock Holmes canon. Those parts were truly amusing to me.

Who would like it? Take advantage of the free preview on Amazon. If you like it, then you'll probably like the book. Otherwise, you need to like mashups (Lovecraft/Holmes/steampunk) with a hefty dose of humor.½

A penny dreadful style take on Holmes, with Holmes as a bumbling idiot warlock and Watson as the doctor cum detective. This book features one longer novella followed by a series of short stories, each based loosely on a different canon Holmes adventure. We have riffs on:
-A Study in Scarlet
-The Adventure of the Cardboard Box
-The Adventure of the Yellow Face
-The Adventure of the Speckled Band
-The Adventure of the Resident Patient
-The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton

I actually preferred the short stories to the novella in this one. The novella was bogged down in worldbuilding/establishing, and Holmes is almost too dumb in that story compared to the later ones in which he's developed a little. Its funny...when it isn't trying way, way too hard to be funny. Sometimes the humor is a bit too wacky or a bit too unsubtle for my personal taste.

The bits of art here and there are a nice touch.

First book of the new year, woo!

In a reversal from my opinion on the previous book in this series, I found the novella story to be much better than the short stories in this collection. Similar to the previous book, I found this a witty and funny parody of both eldrich horror and traditional Holmes tales....when it wasn't try too hard. The more zany/less subtle jokes had me rolling my eyes and taking me out of the story. This volume was a little less polished in the short stories than the previous volume.

Fun and engaging. Many have written books attempting to put the style of dolyle with Sherlock Holmes. This one has taken a different direction. I enjoyed it. A respite from the normal. Give it a try and make yourself ready for a new approach to Holmes.

That was just tremendous fun. Retellings of the early Sherlock Holmes stories if Sherlock were a none-too-bright Warlock instead, and Watson the investigator. As matters go on things get more and more interesting. Bought the next two books immediately.

A note for the people complaining about the stupidity of the extended donut joke in the first mystery: A Study in Scarlet, the very first Sherlock Holmes story, suffers from what can charitably be called "creative" narrative choices by Doyle. It's got a boring story in third-person omniscient POV that is used to explain the killer's motivations and backstory, and Denning justifiably mocks it. By replacing Lucy the woman (whose kidnapping, forcible marriage and eventual death drive the killer's desire for revenge in the original story) with Lucy the donut, the author lampshades how totally irrelevant Lucy-the-person is to a narrative that is supposedly all about the killer's love for her. All in the spirit of DeConnick's "sexy lamp" test (can the female character can be replaced by a sexy lamp and the narrative still makes sense?)- clever idea, but it does make for flat reading.

I love this series, it always makes me laugh. It’s such an imaginative twist on Sherlock Holmes. It’s so ridiculously absurd that it’s hilarious. I really don’t have the words to describe these books, they just make me so happy. Goose juice!

Another great book! The comedy is still alive and well with these characters and it makes me love them all the more. I am fully invested in their futures.

If you want laugh out loud ridiculousness then this book is for you. If you want a magical twist to a well known classic then this book is for you. These characters are hilarious and the witty banter between Holmes and Watson will keep you in stitches. This book is a great pick me up and is definitely the one I grab when I need a laugh.

In the vein of some of the re-writings of Sherlock Holmes this is Sherlock as a bit of an idiot, saved by the cleverness of Dr Watson. This is a set of stories, rather than just one, detailing Watson's introduction to the world that Holmes inhabits (and honestly it's done better in the Lord Darcy series). There's a vampire, Inspector Vladislav Lestrange and an Ogre and a variety of other characters that I neither cared about or really remember.

It's not terrible but I have absolutely no inclination to read further in this series, it wasn't enough of any of my catnip to really interest and too much of a parody to make me happy with it. It's a Sherlock Holmes meets Lovecraft style of story. On the surface it had a lot of things that should make me quite happy, paranormal, victorian etc, but no, it just didn't do it for me. Your mileage may vary. It occasionally came across as trying too hard.

The reader, Robert Garson, did quite a good job of reading it.

I purchased this book from Amazon to read with @popthebutterfly readalong. All opinions are my own. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Warlock Holmes A Study in Brimstone by G.S. Denning. Sherlock Holmes is a genius Warlock Holmes is something else............ This book is full of comedic scenes, warlocks, ogres, detectives of Scotland Yard, and one person with deductive reasoning that does almost no good in a world of spirits. If you are a Sherlock fan you will love the twists and turns each of these stories contain. I can not wait to read the next book in the series Warlock Holmes The Hell Hound of Baskervilles. Review also posted on Instagram @borenbooks, Library Thing, Go Read, Goodreads/StacieBoren, Amazon, Twitter @jason_stacie and my blog at readsbystacie.com

Warlock Holmes is an alternate reality to Sherlock Holmes if you couldn't have guessed from the cover.

I'll keep my review short and sweet. I enjoyed it. I'm very picky about my Sherlock and this was very pleasant and a humorous light read.

My biggest complaint is that in the last story, Watson ends up behaving very out of character based on what's established in this book alone. It caught me off guard and I saw no reason to it outside of some forced comedy that wasn't very funny at all. My other complaint is that I enjoyed the smaller cases far more than the opening and ending cases that were the story drivers. The bigger cases surprisingly didn't hold my attention very well.

Otherwise, I recommend anyone into more magic-based fantasy and comedic Sherlock stories to give it a shot. I look forward to reading the sequel.
